“I can’t, Wells. Not right now, anyway. Not with the case and Brittni. The judge, well, he mentioned you by name. I think he was part of the group that lost money, and it's like his personal vendetta to take me down to get at you.”

My stomach soured at the realization my rottenness had spread to him. Maybe this was a bad idea? He would be better off without me. The familiar voice whispered to me my fears, the self-loathing loud and clear. I stepped back, giving myself some space to consider things. His clean cotton scent had permeated my brain, making it difficult to think straight.

I wanted to both rage at him, and to beg, but the memory of Loren on the floor with a sleeping Fort stopped me.

“Then I’ll be the friend you’ve needed for years, the one you were to me. I’ll be that person now for you, and I’ll prove to you I’m trying, that I’m not going anywhere this time.”

“I don’t even know if that’s a good idea. I want to, Wells, more than anything. But Levi…”

“I know. Levi’s what matters, but don’t lose yourself either. And you’re not getting rid of me that easily. I’m going to become that fungus that seals itself to you.”

He scrunched up his nose, and fuck, if it wasn’t cute seeing Roe all confused. “Fungus? I don’t think you want to be a fungus, Wells.”

“Hmph,” I shrugged. “Well, I never claimed I was good at Biology outside the human body.”

“I believe that’s called anatomy.”

“You just proved my point.”

Something about my statement had us both laughing, the tension easing, but I knew I had my work cut out for me to be worthy of two people.

Two people who needed me to show them I could be counted on. Two people who were the best in the world and deserved nothing less. Two people who had glued me back together again. Two people, I’d come to realize I would burn the world down for.
