“We don’t know the details yet.”

Bennett made a sound.

“I have an undetectable bug with a built-in tracker,” she said.

His face sharpened. “Really?”

“A little toy of Hex’s. We need to get it on Kitty’s phone.”

“Oh, I’ll get it on there.” His voice was dark, full of promise.

She needed to distract him. If he didn’t lighten up, he’d blow this. Kitty would take one look at him and see a predator on the hunt. “So, did your mother have a thing for Jane Austen?”

His head shot up. “What?”

“Bennett Knightley. Lizzie Bennet from my favorite Austen,Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Knightley fromEmma.”

“My father is responsible for the Knightley bit, but yes, my mother scarred me and my siblings for life.”

Hadley smiled. “Tell me one of your brothers is named Fitzwilliam.”

Bennett snorted and his lips quirked.

Ah. The distraction was working.

“No,” he said.

“Wickham?”

He laughed. “No. But one of my brothers is Weston.”

Hadley thought for a second. “FromEmma.”

He nodded. “And my other brother is Brandon.”

“Colonel Brandon fromSense and Sensibility. Excellent.”

“And I have a sister called Courtney.”

“Hmm? FromPersuasion?”

“Nope. General Courtney is fromNorthanger Abbey.”

Hadley snapped her fingers. “So close.”

A dark gray Maserati Quattroporte pulled up at the curb.

A big man got out of the driver’s seat. He was wearing a suit, but Hadley could tell instantly that the man would prefer being in cargo pants.

“Ex-military,” she murmured. “SAS.”

The man had dark skin, shaved black hair, and a dark beard. He jerked his chin at her.

“Henry Bretton,” Bennett said. “Halle Atwood. She’s Secura’s new head of communications.”

“A pleasure,” Hadley said.

As the man took a few steps toward her, she noted he had a prosthetic leg but hid it well. Clearly this was another person Bennett had given a job to after they’d left the military.
