“Bullshit,” Henry said.

Hadley blinked.

Bennett made a sound and opened the back door of the car. “Fuck, have some manners, Henry.”

“No way she’s a communications manager.” Henry’s voice was a deep rasp.

He circled back to the driver’s seat.

Hadley slipped into the back seat and Bennett climbed in after her. Suddenly, the luxury car felt far smaller.

Henry pulled into traffic, heading for Mayfair.

Her phone pinged and she glanced down at the message from Hex. Her chest tightened. She’d guessed as much.

“Okay, Henry, this is Hadley Lockwood,” Bennett said. “Former MI6, currently works for Sentinel Security out of New York.”

Henry grunted.

“Knightley, I’m undercover,” she said. “You’re not supposed to tell everybody who I am.”

“Henry here knows everything. Hadley’s helping find whoever the fuck is betraying Secura.”

Henry grunted again. “Good.”

She sank back against the leather seat. “We think it links to an arms dealer called L’Orage.” She wasn’t sure she was happy trusting this Henry.

The man’s curse was low and rough. He met Hadley’s gaze in the rearview mirror. “I’m not going to share intel with a fucking arms dealer. What Knightley didn’t share is that I’m his best friend. And he saved my life overseas. I’d die for him.”

“He gets mushy like this a lot,” Bennett said. “It’s embarrassing.”

Henry ignored him.

But Hadley saw clearly that Henry Bretton was not lying. He would do whatever he had to do to protect Knightley.

“We’re going to surveil a society woman who might have links to L’Orage,” Hadley said.

“This woman used Archie,” Bennett clipped out. “She’s older, married.”

“Fuck. A cougar.”

“She cooked him,” Bennett said unhappily.

He was really upset about the young man, even though Archie had betrayed him and Secura.

Hadley shifted on the seat, glancing sideways at him. “You’re paying for Archie’s medical treatment, and you hired him one of the best legal firms in London.” That little tidbit had been in Hex’s last message.

Bennett sank back in his seat. “So?”

Helping someone who hurt him. She couldn’t get a handle on him and it left her off kilter. He wasn’t just some rough, former soldier. He wasn’t just a rich, entitled businessman.

He turned his head and met her gaze.

It hit her like a punch to the gut.

She quickly looked straight ahead.

Bennett cleared his throat. “I got this for you.” He held something out.
