“Yup. Uh, you know how Hamish was arrested for murder late last year? Well, now he was arrested for robbing a bank.”
“I was?” Hamish pushed his hands on his hips. “Oh, I mean... yes, I was.”
“Then why aren’t you still in jail? And why would the richest guy in the country need to rob a bank?”
“Oh, you’ll laugh when you hear why it all happened.” I threw my head back and forced myself to chuckle.
“So funny. Crazy story...” Hamish smiled, shaking his head as if he knew exactly what I was talking about.
Eric glanced around the room until he found a navy velvet wingback chair and took a seat. “It sounds like it’s going to be good. Let me get comfortable.”
Now I had to come up with an over-the-top story where Hamish robs a bank. I moved my head from side to side until I heard a crack in my neck and shook out my arms. I could do this. Just start talking and the story will come.
“So, Hamish was walking by a bank in town.”
“The Castle Ridge Trustover on Fitzlee or Castle Ridge Bank on Tide Street?” Eric asked.
Damn, I did not know he knew all the banks in town.
Eric’s eyes grew and he muttered, “The only reason I know about the bank is I needed to cash a check. Not that I need funds or anything.”
He chuckled, but it felt forced. Something was weird about how Eric was acting. But I couldn’t worry about that now, I had a made-up robbery to get through.
“It’s in the next town over. You wouldn’t know it.” I shook my head.
“Yeah, some small, mom-and-pop-type of place,” Hamish added.
“Mom-and-pop? Is that a thing? I’m pretty sure banks are owned by big companies, not small family businesses.” Eric scratched the back of his neck.
I waved my hands in the air and glared at Hamish. “I think he meant it’s just a small bank. Few locations, so you probably don’t know it.”
Hamish shrugged, only to nod when he noticed Eric glanced over at him.
“Anyway, apparently there was a robbery moments earlier, and one teller pointed at Hamish as the robber. It was all a case of mistaken identity; something I pointed out once I got to the police station.”
“Weird.” Eric scratched the back of his neck. “You seem to get mistaken for bad people a lot, Hamish.”
“Must have one of those faces, I guess.” Hamish frowned.
Now that I just sweated through my shirt after coming up with a totally ridiculous and over-the-top story that Eric believed, I mentioned how I needed a shower.
It didn’t take me long to clean myself up and shave. When I came out, Hamish had invited Eric to lunch with us, which I wasn’t that happy about. I knew he would keep pestering me about Monday or finding his sister.
We drove into town and found a nice little spot. Hamish and I ran inside to grab a table while Eric parked.
The restaurant smelled of garlic, and my stomach rumbled. I glanced around at the small square tables covered with white linen and smiled. There were a few leather booths in the back, which would work for us. But right as I was about to mention that to Hamish, I saw her.
Lola. And she was with the guy from the hospital.
Chapter 10
Lola
“That’s amazing,” I said for the tenth time this afternoon.
“Yeah, and you’ll never believe where I went next? The Swiss Alps,” Wayde said right before lifting a piece of bread to his mouth, using his fork.
I was quickly realizing why the guy was single. When I told Lydia that Wayde had asked me on a date, she freaked out. I got the feeling she was living a little through me. I think that girl needed to get laid. She was way too happy for someone other than herself to get a date.
