Hamish turned his head to notice the television was still on. I had the sound turned way down, as I just wanted to be surrounded by silence.
“Are you watchingPride and Prejudiceagain?” He stood and found the remote, shutting it off. “Isn’t that like your tenth time seeing that movie?”
More like fifteenth time, but I didn’t correct him.
I had a thing for period dramas. I blamed it on growing up in a house with my mom and three sisters. When I was watching those movies, I felt comforted. Like the people I loved in the world surrounded me.
“You’ve got to get out of here, Jenner. Go clean up. I’m taking you out for—”
There was a knock at the door. Both Hamish and I stared at each other.
“When did you call Jocelyn?”
“This morning. Do you think she’d get here by now?”
I did the math in my head. “She would have had to leave right away, and you know her. She’s got to make sure everything is safe.”
“It’s essential when you live in the wilderness.”
The knock came again.
“Shit. I guess I have to answer it. Prepare for the she-devil.”
It was best for my sister that she lived in the middle of nowhere. She didn’t get along with people. I loved her, but she was very rough around the edges, like a serrated knife.
I got to the door and had to force myself to pull it open. And when I did, I let out a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank God,” I mumbled.
It was only Eric.
“I knew you’d be happy to see me. That’s what I told Rock, so he let me know where you were.”
Wow. For a man who ran an exclusive resort, Rock was terrible at keeping his guests happy. Because I was the opposite of happy; I was pissed.
“Come and join the party.” I waved him through.
“Party? I did not know.” Eric walked in and looked around.
“It’s just an expression.” I shook my head, wondering if I’d feel better after showering.
“Hey, what happened to you on Monday? You just left Marika there all alone.” Eric shoved his hands on his hips.
I glanced over at Hamish, who shrugged. I couldn’t tell Eric that I not only saw his sister, but she was at the estate on Monday.
“That was my fault, Eric,” Hamish said. “I texted Jenner and told him I had an emergency.”
Eric turned and narrowed his eyes at Hamish. “What emergency?”
“Uh, well... it’s sort of embarrassing.” Hamish flicked his gaze to me in obvious need of help.
“Whatever it was, I’m sure it wasn’t as embarrassing as you think. We’re all friends here; you can tell me.” Eric folded his arms over his chest.
“It was... uh—”
“A bank robbery,” I blurted out.
“What?”they both gasped at the same time.
It was the first thing that popped into my head, though, admittedly, I should have thought it through a little more.
