The beach was just coming into view. There were guests lounging on the chairs, lying in the sand, or playing volleyball.
“They did this together. I arrived before opening day and saw the mess they had to deal with to rebuild this place,” she added.
“Yeah.” He nodded as he thought back to the first time that he’d stepped foot on River Camps. “They pretty much had to do a full overhaul on the place. Still, I can’t imagine working anyplace else.”
“Me either.” She laughed. “Can you imagine us hobbling down the pathways with walkers?”
He smiled. “Better yet, in those go-cart things? We can race.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
She sighed and leaned back again. “I don’t even need food. The sunlight feels so nice today. I could just nap right here for my entire break.”
“Are you sure? I brought your favorite?” He stopped rowing and pulled out the containers.
“Pizza?” she asked, sitting up slightly.
He laughed. “I was close.” He opened the lid to one of the calzones he’d grabbed.
She hungrily took it. “Okay, food, then a quick nap.” She took a bite.
After lunch, he walked Jules back to the main building and went to find Brett. He had another idea that might get him in trouble, but he didn’t care. He wanted more than anything to teach Lisa Tribberton a lesson. The woman had hurt people he cared for. It was time she knew how that felt.
“Got a sec?” he asked, knocking on Brett’s door. Since the man had taken over security for the camp, he and Damion had gotten closer. They’d grown up together. Had known one another since grade school. Brett had turned to the law; Damion had turned to the sea.
Now that Brett was almost one hundred percent back to his pre-getting-shot self, he had started hitting the gym more often, joining Carter, Dean, and Damion during their three-times-a-week workout ritual.
“Sure.” Brett shut his computer down and motioned for Damion to sit down.
“How bad would it look for you, and the camp, if footage of Lisa Tribberton attacking Zoey was leaked?” he came right out and said.
Brett looked slightly shocked. Then he tilted his head and started laughing.
“It would serve her right,” Brett admitted. “I’m not too sure about the backlash for the camp. If there would be any.” Then he frowned. “We’d want to talk to Zoey and Dylan first. Get their okay. We do own the rights to the footage. Guests agree to the security measures when they check in. So legally…” He dropped off. “I’ll still want to check it out with the lawyers.”
“Seeing what Zoey and Dylan went through this morning makes me want Lisa Tribberton to squirm,” he admitted.
“Hell, yes.” Brett nodded. “Seeing Robert Dixon, Sr., being hauled out of the courtroom in chains was the reward I needed, so I understand. It didn’t undo the horrors Lea had to go through, but it helped.”
Damion nodded. “Knowing that Lisa Tribberton would have to explain her actions would help. When do the news reports go out on the camp?”
“Elle told Lea the first one went out this morning. Jules and Beth have been busy vetting calls,” Brett said as he typed on his computer. “Sent a query to the lawyer. Do you want to ask Zoey and Dylan yourself?”
Damion thought about it, then nodded. “Yeah.” He glanced at his watch. “I’m closing on my land in an hour. I’ll head over to their place first.”
Brett smiled. “Finally. I thought you closed last week.”
“No, there were some issues with the property line. The place hadn’t been surveyed in fifty years.”
“I hope it all worked out.”
“It did. I got five more feet on the left side than I thought I’d get.” He smiled. “Which means the price went up slightly, but bank of Owen assures me that he’s good to cover the cost. I’ll probably be working it off for the rest of my life, that and the house Aiden’s going to build for us.”
“Us?” Brett’s eyebrows shot up.
Jules and he hadn’t told anyone they were living together. They were pretty sure several people knew, but everyone had been so focused on saving the camp that there hadn’t been time to share the good news.
“Yeah, Jules and I moved in together last week,” he answered with a smile.
“Hell, congratulations.” Brett laughed. “Of course, for the bet, we’ll need to know the exact date.”
