“On a new book, I hope.”

“That’s on pause briefly.”

“What the hell happened, triple S?

I sighed before launching into a brief explanation of the situation. Kai knew about my evil stepbrother.

“Motherfucker. If I had a violent bone in my body, I’d kill him for you. Are you alright? Is there anything I can do to help?”

“With the step-monster, no. With my current job, yes. I’m doing a huge remodel. This morning I received an email from the manufacturer saying my order is on back order. I need to get the project finished in three weeks.”

“Send me your need list, and your wish list. I’ll see what I can do. Now tell me where the hell you are.”

I blushed furiously. “New Orleans.”

“Oh, girl. I’ll see you next Mardi Gras. Plan on bunking with you.”

“If you don’t mind bunking with bikers.”

“Bikers? The badass kind with muscles and tats?”

“Yes.”

“Spill.”

I spent the next twenty minutes filling in Kai while multitasking. First, I sent him the email with a detailed list of must haves and a list of wishes before consulting my spreadsheet. The spreadsheet contained a master list of what needed to be done. I had a different tab for each room. A list of all the items needed, with a few early arrivals already checked off.

The day was off to a good start. I missed Kai immensely. The last several months, I’d either been caring for Bernie or in a fugue. I had a hard time shaking off my bff’s loss. An ache that had eased with Gambit in my life. Not just Gambit, and Willow, but everyone I’d met thanks to her.

It was near lunch when my cell phone rang. Surprised to see Kai’s number, I quickly answered the call.

“Hi. Long time no chat.”

He chuckled. “You are one lucky bitch. Ask me why?”

I laughed. “Why?”

“I just did a remodel not far from you. I have everything you need, and it's all less than two years old. Better yet, they are still under warranty, and I have your wish list items as well.

“I love you so fucking hard, Kai.”

A growl had me looking up from my desk. Gambit stood a few feet away with a scowl on his face.

“I love you too, triple S. Happy birthday. I’m sending you a little something with the order as a gift.”

“Thank you, Kai.

“Ciao, bella.”

“Ciao.”

“Who do you fucking love so hard?” My man asked.

His scowl deepened. I held back my laughter. Gambit would have to get used to all the men in my life. I collected game men. Like magnets we were pulled together.

“Kai Johnson, he managed a large chain of hotels. Our suppliers messaged me saying the appliances and other equipment we need are on back order. I called Kai hoping he could point me in the Right direction. “

“And did he?” Gambit’s tone was just short of demanding.
