“Well, I also hacked into your devices to be sure that Tom wasn’t stalking you in more ways than showing up at your work. I searched for signs of him hacking into your phone, computer, iPad, email, and other accounts like your Kindle.”

“Wait, what? Oh my God….”

He took a small step toward her, but she took a step back to let the distance between them be as it was.

“Kate, I know this must come as a shock to you, but—”

“Oh my God, you went through my phone? My Kindle? This is—”

“Yeah, I know.”

She saw the look of defeat spread all over his face. She had no words to offer him to wipe that look from his face. She was flabbergasted. Shocked. The artwork she’d seen was flattering; she felt seen and even loved by him. But this? This was intrusive. She felt like he’d replaced Kayla’s stalker with his own stalking ways, as he must’ve looked into her most private thoughts.

“I… I need to go.”

“Kate, please stay. Don’t go.”

She moved around his outstretched arm and walked back to his bedroom. Oh my God. Had he been snooping through private belongings? Was he still going through her personal stuff? What was she to do now? She was already in love with him. The past month they spent together was hands down the best of her entire life. She’d felt like she could take on the world with Donovan at her side.

But now? It felt like fate had found a sick way to tug the carpet right from under her, to make sure she would fall flat on her face. How could this be happening? Just when everything finally had felt so right.
