Fear swirls in my stomach, and I drop my head in my hands. “Fuck!”

His hand comes to my shoulder and he squeezes. “Maybe it shouldn’t be you who goes in when we get there.”

I swing my head around to look at him. “Not a fucking chance! I’m not going to stand and watch while the woman I love and her child are trapped in a burning building.”

“Okay. Okay,” he says, holding his hands up. “Just don’t go rushing in. We need to assess what’s happening first.”

My jaw pulses as I drop my eyes from his. “I know what I’m doing, Dylan. I’m not a fucking proby.”

“I know, but it’s different when it’s someone you care about.”

“Can’t this thing go any faster?” I shout, ignoring him and bouncing my knee. Why didn’t I just tell her I loved her last night? Why didn’t I just say the words? If anything happens to them… fuck. I can’t eventhinkof anything happening to them. I’ve only just found her.

Everyone’s unusually quiet on the short drive. No one tries to assure me that everything will be okay. We’ve all been to too many shouts to know that promises like that are just empty words. Fires kill and we can’t save everyone. I hope to God that’s not the case this time.
