“I’m going to stop questioning my new reality. I’m going to make the best of the situation, live one day at a time.”

“With a stranger?”

“You’re no longer a stranger. You’re the man who saved my life,” she said firmly. “And there’s no one else I trust but you.”

“I promise I won’t abuse or misuse that trust.”

Jessie didn’t know why his words had such an effect on her. Her heart warmed. She’d been with Sergio for only a day and yet she was falling for him. No, that wasn’t entirely right either. She’d had a crush on Sergio ever since she started working at Mama Rossi’s.

“Leave the plates and cutlery to me,” she said.

“You sure?” he asked with a frown.

“You did the cooking. I can do the washing.”

Sergio nodded. “I have some work to do. Check the perimeter, the security system. I’m going to check in with a few trusted contacts, see what Victor’s up to.”

“Go.”

Jessie finished washing the dishes.

Sergio had stepped out of the trailer a moment ago. He left his laptop opened on the living room coffee table. She paused at the lighted screen. Sergio’s screensaver was a photo of her looking away from the camera. It was taken at the restaurant and she was on her way to the kitchen. She rubbed at the goosebumps over her arms. Sergio hadn’t hidden the fact he’d become obsessed with her. That was the main reason he saved her. Jessie was more alarmed by the fact she wasn’t too rattled by his confession. She was attracted to him and he was the same. That much was clear.

What had he said earlier? That they were perfect for each other because neither of them was completely sane? It could almost be the exact opposite. Two imperfect souls couldn’t make each other whole.Too late to back out now.She already made her choice and she was sticking around to see where this particular road would end.
