“Resting your eyes, then. And sometime snoring.” He kissed her nose.

“Now I know you’re lying.” She laughed. She had been caught.

“I am so glad your brother asked me to check on you. And that you leave your door unlocked.” He rolled them back, so they were facing each other again.

“I was told it was an invitation to come in once.” Running her hands up his chest, she marveled at his muscles. That she was allowed to touch them.

“So, I came in. I did knock, you just didn’t answer.” He tapped her nose with his finger.

“Sorry.” She tried to bite it but missed.

“You were resting your eyes.” Chuckling at her, he yawned.

“That I was.” She smiled down at him.

“You’re adorable when you sleep. Have I ever told you that?” His eyes were closing as he said it.

“No. Maybe if you had, you would have got here faster.” She touched his cheek. “Are you falling asleep?”

“Yes, I assume you will too in a moment.” He pulled her to him.

“Nope, I’m wired now. Most people fall asleep, but not me. It’s like an adrenaline rush, and I take a while to come down.”

“You, who can sleep at the drop of a hat?” His eyes were open but just barely.

“That’s why I have so many speeding tickets from you. Post-sex speeding.” Instantly, she wanted to reel them back in, she didn’t need him to know why she had been speeding all those months ago.

“Then I will go hide your car keys.” He turned her in his arms and pulled her tight against his body. She felt he was staking his claim on her.

“Goodnight, Hue.”

“Goodnight, Nordskov.”

As she felt him fall into a steady breathing pattern, she lay in his arms, loving the feel of his arms around her. Cursing herself for telling him about the speeding tickets. He’d given her three tickets and way more warnings before that in the seven months she kept going back to Paul. In other counties, she could usually get out of the tickets by claiming it was a medical emergency, but Hue knew her, and she couldn’t lie to him.

Snuggling closer to his warm body, she tried not to think about the fact that she was lying to him every day by not telling him she was pregnant. But until tonight, she didn’t think he cared beyond her being Math’s sister. Now she had no idea what to do about what was happening between them.

She was starting to show, so she almost had to tell him. Really showing, not just extra weight around the middle. Maybe if his wife had ever conceived, he would have noticed that her stomach was harder than it should be. Maybe since he had never seen her naked, he didn’t notice her body was different, like she saw it.

What she didn’t want to do was turn this happy, excited feeling she had when she was with him into the sad depression that was her life. He was a bright spot in her life right now, and she needed it.

Sleep overtook her as his warmth seeped into her, giving way to her constant exhaustion. She resolved to just live day to day with Hue, forgetting about the future and the past when she was with him. Just let herself be happy for a little while before life came crashing back to her.

CHAPTER11

The trail ride was fun, except he had the wrong Nordskov sister behind him on the four-wheeler. It was Julia whose body periodically brushed him as he drove behind Kit. The bright spot was that Amanda was sitting behind Kit, so he had a perfect view of her being jostled around.

To make it even better, she was constantly telling Kit to slow down or not to hit so many potholes. He could hear her words from where he was. To make her point, she would occasionally hit Kit’s shoulder.

The other bad thing was that it was twenty degrees, and it had snowed a little overnight. It was colder than he thought it would be—another reason he would have liked the heat of Amanda holding on to him.

Hue was on the last of the three four-wheeler train, with Math and Tess in the lead. They had been out for around two hours and were heading back since Tess needed to feed the baby soon. They had left the infant with Math’s older kids. The oldest was sixteen.

In front of him, Kit slammed on the brakes and turned off the machine. Climbing off, she started to walk away, yelling, “You drive it if I’m so bad at it!”

“No, Kit, you drive. I will walk. Go just as fast as you want to—not that I was stopping you before!” Amanda shouted as she climbed off the machine.

Turning, Kit yelled back, “I am driving just as fast as Math is. That is how it works!”
