As she lost control of her ability to stay quiet, his mouth covered hers, and she moaned as she came. Their kiss deepened as he slid between her legs. She could feel his erection press against her, and she shifted her hips in hopes of getting him to slide in.

“Do you have protection?” he whispered as he nibbled on her ear.

“I’m on the pill.” She sighed and wrapped her legs around him as he entered her.

Slowly and silently, he pulled in and out as her hips matched his easy rhythm. Letting him take control, she just enjoyed the feeling of him touching her, caressing her, being inside her. Her eye caught his, and she smiled at him, then bit her bottom lip to stop the moan from leaving her mouth. His eyes flared with desire, and his tempo increased, making it harder to control the noises coming from her.

His mouth clamped over hers as she came, losing her ability to be quiet, and she moaned into his mouth, matching his groan as they came together.

Laying with him on top of her, both breathing heavily, she glanced over at her still-sleeping son. Then she turned back to Ruston and kissed him, running her hands through his curly hair. Since their activities had made him sweat, his hair was slightly damp, making the curls more pronounced. Adorable.

He rolled them onto their sides, looking at each other. He ran a thumb over her cheek and down to her chin. Then he lightly pressed a kiss to her lips, then her cheek.

“I didn’t think you would be quiet enough. I thought you would wake him for sure,” he whispered.

“Me too.” She couldn’t believe the boy was still sleeping.

“Goodnight, Hazel May.” He kissed her nose.

“Goodnight, Pastor Ruston.” She turned in his arms so that her back was pressed to him.

He pulled her close and kissed her shoulder, then her head.

Hazel felt Ruston’s breathing even out as she lay beside him, watching her son sleep. She had no idea what the future held for her or Ruston, but she would enjoy the present for as long as she could.

Her eyes drifted close as she thought about the next day with Mathias Nordskov’s help with the harvest. It was going to be way different than what she and her grandfather did. Would she enjoy it? She would find out tomorrow.

CHAPTER10

Ruston had wokenin the middle of the night with Hazel in his arms, so he pulled her closer to him as he lay in the dark little room and listened to her breathe. There was not a lot of room in the little bed they shared, but in his mind, it was perfect. She was perfect.

Running his hand lightly down her body, he smiled into the darkness when she moaned in her sleep. Though the two times they had sex were completely different, Ruston couldn’t decide which one was better. He was sure that as long as it was with Hazel, he was happy just to be with her.

Kissing the top of her head, he drifted off to sleep again, content with her in his arms, warm and soft pressed against his body.

The next time he opened his eyes, the body pressed against his was a lot smaller and rounder. John Henry was sound asleep in the spot Hazel had been. Looking around the room, he didn’t see her anywhere. Shifting a little to sit up, the boy’s eyes popped open and looked at him.

Oddly, he realized he had never been alone with the little boy. Hazel rarely let the boy out of her arms. Hazel’s eyes looked back at him from her son as the boy sat up. Wearing little blue pajamas, he analyzed the man who was in his mother’s bed. Ruston was confident the boy had never seen a man in his mother’s bed before.

Ruston was sure the boy was about to cry, but then he smiled a big smile that brought out two dimples in his cheeks. One more than his mother had.

The little boy leaned over to Ruston and ran a hand over his hair. “Bless you,” the boy said in recognition of who Ruston was.

With a smile, Ruston copied the boy, making John Henry giggle. Then he said, “I am Ruston. Can you say Ruston?”

The little boy frowned at Ruston. Did he understand? Ruston had actually spent very little time around little kids. Sure, his brothers had kids, but he didn’t spend time one on one with any of them. Was he even any good with kids?

Before he could figure out what to talk to a little boy about, he was trapped in bed since he was not wearing any clothes. John Henry climbed off the bed but soon came back with a book. Handing it to Ruston, he plopped himself down right next to him. Shifting himself up so he could lean against the headboard, he pulled the boy next to him and started to read.

After he had read it once, John Henry was still looking at the book and said, “Again.” So, Ruston started it again, this time pointing out the animals on the pages and adding voice changes to the characters.

Glancing up, he saw Hazel standing in the doorway. She was fully dressed for the day and was just watching him, holding a coffee cup in her hand. Smiling at her from next to her son, he tapped the bed for her to sit. Still holding the coffee cup, she walked into the room and sat next to him, nearly touching because the bed was so small.

“Morning, Hazel.” He rested a hand on her leg, needing the little bit of connection.

John Henry instantly crawled onto her lap and snuggled in tight. “Mommy.”

“Morning, boys.” She handed Ruston the cup, trying not to spill it as her son wiggled onto her lap.
