Carefully, I make my way out there and see him by the balcony talking with Eric.
I’ve only met Eric a few times. He seemed nice. I wonder what he’ll think of me when he finds out what I am.
I’m not going to let his presence deter me from talking.
When I switch my gaze to Alejandro, love blooms within me. It flows through my veins, fuels my wishes, dreams, and happiness I never thought I could feel after the dark place I went to.
But it’s over now. It’s all over, and it feels like we just began.
“We can’t find Lorenzo, and I’m still not sure where the hell to look for El Diablo. My father lived here, and my uncle’s home was sold years ago,” Alejandro says to Eric in exasperation. “I have picked my fucking brain apart, and I’m still stuck. The only thing that keeps coming at me is that El Diablo is either my father or my uncle.”
“It’s your father,” I speak out, and the two turn to look at me.
“Lucia.” Alejandro says my name tentatively.
Eric, on the other hand, looks at me like he already knows something about me.
“El Diablo is your father. I know from the picture in your office. I never knew who he was before. And Thiago is working with him.”
Alejandro cuts Eric a glance before he looks back at me and walks over, seeming taller.
“How do you know this?” His eyes blaze before they darken.
“My… father and I were captured. My father owed El Diablo money. Three million dollars.” I try to reach for strength in my soul to continue talking. I’m about to tell the worst part. No inner strength comes to me, so I work with my love for him, pushing me to tell the truth. “El Diablo offered me a way to save my father. I was to come here and do this job so I could get information from you. That’s how I know. I’m so sorry.”
I watch the light leave his eyes the way it did when it left Mom’s as she died.
I knew then she was gone.
It’s the same thing now, except what I see leaving Alejandro’s eyes is everything he felt for me.
All I see when I stare back at him is darkness.
