“Caleb, why didn’t you let Millie know?” I asked as I pulled on my coat.
“I… I didn’t know what to tell her.”
“That you had a family crisis,” I suggested. “That your brother died.”
“She didn’t know about him,” he answered quietly. “I didn’t want her seeing me like this either.”
“Will you kick my ass if I tell her?”
Caleb shook his head. “I don’t have the time right now. Maybe later.”
I patted his shoulder. “I’ll hold you to that. Call me if you need anything, or if you want me to send my housekeeper over here.”
“We’ll see.”
He tried to hide it, but I saw the glimmer in his eyes. A smile twitched at the corner of his mouth. It seemed like there might be hope for Caleb Harrow yet. Before he could stop me, I hugged him quickly.
“Take care of yourself, man,” I told him.
“I… I’ll try.”
And with that, I headed out into the dark night and towards my car. I waited to get inside my Fiat before pulling up her number.
“Hello?” that softly Irish voice greeted me.
“Millie, it’s Warren,” I began, too sobered up to be breaking this news. “I think before I say anything, you might want to sit down.”
