Chapter Twenty-Eight

Harper

I found it difficult to breathe.

My heart hammered against my chest as I sat in the backseat, my hands bound behind my back. I couldn’t free myself from the metal that dug into my skin.

Pleading with my captor wouldn’t help either. I didn’t even know his name. I tried forcing the memory to surface from that night in Vegas. I’d definitely seen him before, but it was all an intense blur.

Why did Enzo want me?

Was it because I was his wife? A stupid piece of paper and words spoken had bound us together, but it could all be undone. Right?

That is, if he didn’t have other plans for me.

Why was Enzo in Breckenridge? Why hadn’t he tracked me down in Los Angeles or elsewhere?

Was it because there was less security on location than on the studio set?

None of it made sense.

He opened the windows of the car, the breeze loud as it whirled around me, the dark cloth making it impossible to see or feel against my face.

The car jolted as we hit a bump in the road. I wasn’t buckled in and tossed around the backseat.

The driver slammed on the brakes, not helping matters, landing my face against the headrest before falling back onto my butt.

“Stay here,” he grunted. He shut off the car, and the front door squeaked open and shut.

Silence.

I recognized Enzo’s voice from the restaurant. “Where the fuck have you been?” Enzo demanded. His voice carried through the open window.

“I brought you a present in the backseat,” he said. “Want to take a look?”

“I don’t like surprises, Zan.”

Zan’s rough laugh sent a shudder down my spine. “I wouldn’t call it a surprise, Boss. She’s your wife.”

“Fuck!”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. My mouth dry.

“You really know how to ruin an operation,” Enzo said. “You disappoint me, Zan. Do you know what I expect of men who disappoint me?”

Zan cleared his throat. “Boss, I just wanted to show my appreciation. Please, don’t do this.”

Was he begging?

“Bringing her here could destroy everything I’ve worked to achieve. I cannot have loose ends.” Enzo’s voice carried louder, more insistent, etched with not just disappointment but anger. His voice grew louder.

“Please,” Zan begged. “I promise I’ll get rid of her. No one has to know it was me.”

“You idiot! She’s my wife. The first place they’ll check is here. They’re going to be looking for me!” His voice boomed and carried through the car.

I shivered and pulled my body smaller, tighter, wanting to be invisible.

“You’ve disgraced the family.”
