“He saved my life, though, so he got to go first,” he mumbled before closing his eyes.

“Fuck!” Pixel shouted, turning to me. “Sew this man up.” She handed me a kit, and I looked down at it, no clue what to do.

“Um?” I looked around the van, hoping someone else would be more qualified. But there was only us, Beau and Nicco were up front as they drove and made sure no one followed.

Looking through the kit, I pulled out a staple gun, hoping it was easier to use than a needle. Squeezing the skin together, I prayed I was doing it right. My fingers began to slip on the blood as I pressed it down and I was glad the dude was out cold. It couldn’t feel good. Once I had three of them in his skin, I sat back, exhaustion coating me.

Pixel looked over, assessing me. “You okay, kid?”

“Yeah. I did learn something,” I said, my eyes closing.

“What’s that?” she asked, doing the same thing I’d just done to Sax’s leg.

“I definitely don’t want to be a doctor. I’ll stick with art.” I slumped back against the van, no longer fighting my eyes, and I fell asleep, praying this hadn’t been some hunger-induced hallucination and when I woke up, I’d be back with my family.
