Iwas close to strangling Atticus’ cousin. I’d never met a more insufferable human before. For one thing, she never shut up. She was always prattling on about one thing or another as if I cared. The second thing, she asked too many questions and reminded me of a rambunctious child who’d been let outside for the first time and had to ask a question about everything.

“Are you about done?”

“Not yet, Oscar. Like I was saying, I think what the problem is, that, in our town, everyone knows who I am, so no one wants to ask me out. What do you think?”

“For the last time, my name’s not Oscar.”

“Whatever, you say, Oscar. So?”

“I’m pretty sure no one wants to date you because you’re annoying, not because they’re scared of you.” I glared at her, daring her to retort.

“Interesting. You see, I hadn’t considered that angle.” She flitted around the room she’d made into a lab, going from one machine to the computer, back to the machine that was running some diagnostic thing. As frustrated as I was, I couldn’t deny she was brilliant. Half of the stuff she spouted off, I had no clue what it meant. “So, what you’re saying is I should be more mysterious? Did that work with you and your girl? She’s hot in that whole sexy librarian kind of way. I dig it for you, Oscar.”

Growling, I turned my back on her, ignoring her, and pulled out my phone again, tempted to call Spitfire back, so I didn’t have to listen to this insufferable child any longer. Instead, I found a text from Atticus asking how it was going and another one from Monroe updating me on the Brittni situation.

Golden Boy: I’ve found where she’ll be tonight. Are you sure this will work?

ME: It will work. Not having second thoughts are you? And here I was just starting to respect you.

Golden Boy: No. It needs to happen. I see that now.

ME: Good. It will be taken care of. I’ll send you proof once it’s completed.

Golden Boy:That’s not necessary. I trust you.

ME: Suit yourself.

ME: And thank you.

Golden Boy: Shouldn’t I be thanking you?

ME: Not for taking out the trash, for trusting me. It means a lot to me.

Golden Boy: Oh, well, I do. I know you love Loren and wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize her. She trusts you, so I do. Plus, Levi and Jude like you, so you can’t be too bad.

ME: Geez, thanks.

ME: Tell the runt I’ll teach him how to win at poker next time.

Golden Boy: I don’t know if I should be happy you want to spend time with Levi or scared you’re teaching him how to gamble.

ME: This is our life. You’re a part of it now, so get used to it.

Golden Boy: He says he’s looking forward to it. Later, Sax

Smiling some, I clicked over to Mas’ message, hoping it meant I could leave. We still had the family meeting and Brittni to contend with before I got to see my spitfire again. The sooner those two things happened, the sooner I got to hold her.

MAS: Status?

ME: Still waiting. She talks too much.

MAS: Tell her to speed up. The meeting’s starting. I’ll send someone to replace you. She’s to text you and me as soon as she knows.

ME: Understood.

I sighed, feeling some of the tension leaving me. Turning, I found her watching me, waiting for a response. “What?”
