“So, are you guys gonna talk about the fact you both like the same girl?” Immy mentioned casually, throwing it out there for us. I looked at Sax as he peered up at me, and I shrugged my shoulders. “Nah.”

“Isn’t that weird?” she questioned. I was surprised when Sax was the one to answer this time.

“What’s weird about it? We both like her. She likes both of us. As long as we all know and are happy with the arrangement, why can’t we? Life’s too short to live in the confining rules of the world. The mafia should’ve taught you that, princess.”

“I guess when you put it like that.”

“Besides,” he continued, stretching out his long legs, “benefit of being in the mafia, she’s more protected this way. More men to make sure she’s always covered. Can’t say I don’t sleep better at night knowing that.”

I didn’t say anything. But inside, it made sense. I was envious. Of course, I wanted to be the only one she needed. Thinking more realistically, though, perhaps, Loren deserved more.

Settling back, the rest of the ride was quiet as we drove home. Before we pulled in, Imogen asked one more question. “So, does this mean I can go back to therapy?”

“Yeah. I think we could talk to Atticus about that.”

“And can I have my phone?”

“Now, now, princess, don’t push it.”

“Ugh, you guys are the worst! Like, seriously. How can you expect a teenager to live like this? It’s absurd.” She continued to rant as she walked inside, leaving Sax and me behind. Chuckling, I shook my head, “I’m so glad she’s a typical teenager, after all.”

“Yeah, me too.”

The night hadn’t ended with any grand sweeping promises of love. But the night ended with me understanding what it truly meant to love someone.

And while I wasn’t ready to say the words out loud yet, or even admit it to myself, I had started to come to the conclusion that I did, or at least I could.

And that was something I had never imagined before.
