Chapter Nineteen

Justice

I lie on the couch, my arms stretched above my head with my eyes closed. I can feel her looking at me, and it makes me smile. I love that she likes looking at me.

“You see something you like?” I tease, knowing she’s staring at me, and it’s confirmed when I open my eyes and glance over at her. Sky’s biting her lip as she stares at my abs, making me laugh.

“I can’t help it when you look like that,” she says, waving her hand at my stomach.

“You can do something about it,” I tell her just as the burner phone rings. I shoot up off the couch and grab it, bringing it to my ear. I listen to Tom rattle of information, only giving him short answers as Sky watches me intently.

When he hangs up, she looks to me for answers.

“What was that about?”

“We can go home,” I tell her, although I don’t know how I feel about that. I don’t want to go home yet. I want more time with her. I don’t want this to end.

“Did they catch him?” she asks, tilting her head to the side in confusion.

“No. It seems Bana moved out of state, and they no longer think he’s a threat,” I tell her.

“That’s good news!” Sky says excitedly before rushing over and throwing herself into me. I wrap an arm around her to hold her steady, but I don’t like this one bit.

“You’re not happy about this?” she asks when she pulls back a little. I shake my head. “Why?”

“I can’t risk you not being safe, Skylar. I’m hiring security for you when you’re not with me.”

“What? I don’t need security, Justice.”

“Yes, you do. And I’m not listening to you argue with me either. I’m hiring them, and that’s it,” I snap. She pulls away from me now and stares at me strangely.

“I don’t need your security. I’ll be fine,” Sky snaps back at me.

“You think guys like him just give up, Skylar? Do you think they just walk away?”

“Well, the cops seem to think so,” she answers, placing her hand on her hip.

“I don’t trust them anymore either. This isn’t right. It’s all wrong.”

“I think you’re overreacting. The FBI wouldn’t let us go home if they didn’t think it was safe.” She points out, pulling her hair up and tying it in a messy bun. I drop back down onto the couch as she looks at me.

“Overreacting? You think that’s what I’m doing?”

“Yeah, I do. I think you’re getting a little nervous about everything, and this is how you’re dealing with it.”

“What the hell would you know about how I deal with things, Sky?” I know it’s wrong to say to her, but I can’t help it. I’m on edge, and this only fuels the fire inside me.

“I know enough. I know that I don’t need this bullshit from you either,” she says, flipping her hair over her shoulder and walking to the bedroom. I push off the couch and follow behind her. How could I not? Sky is grabbing her suitcase and stuffing her clothes in it. She’s happy to be leaving here, and I can’t blame her. She misses her job and her friends.

“It isn’t safe until Bana’s back behind bars, Skylar.”

“What do you want to do, Justice? Stay here forever until he’s caught?”

“That wouldn’t be the worst idea,” I tell her. She laughs, but the smile doesn’t meet her eyes.

“You’re insane. I have a job I need to get back to. This is good news. Again, they wouldn’t let us go home if they didn’t think it was safe,” she reminds me. I run my hand through my hair as I watch her.

After a while, I give up and give in. I pack my bag, and we walk to the door together to be greeted by Tom with a smile on his face. I ignore him and storm past to the waiting car, not bothering to look back.
