“I’m dealing with you later Nessa,” I said before I grabbed Kiara as she started to crumple.

The scent of her filled every breath as I ran. She settled close to my body. This is what a mate should feel like. Like nothing in the entire world mattered except her.

I ceased to notice anything else for several minutes. I just wanted to feel her here with me.

“Did you really kill him?” Her voice was small and if it weren’t for my wolf's hearing I’d have missed it.

“Yes, little-wolf. He won’t be coming for you ever again.”

The sweet scent of her was tainted by the copper of her own blood, but by the way she was responding I hoped it meant the bleeding had stopped.

“Has your wolf come to mend you?” I asked.

A howl broke the night and brought us back to the world that wasn’t just the two of us.

“Where are we going?” She asked.

The sounds of a destroyed pack faded as we got closer and closer to the mountains and further from where the wolves would all be.

“I have a small place,” I said without elaborating. She didn’t question, and I worried that she’d lost too much blood. This female gave me hell any time I talked to her and here she was calm and quiet.

Where was her wolf when she needed her? Kiara’s wolf had to be fighting her way out. It had been a few days, she should have been able to find the energy to surface. I think anyway.

“When was the last time you shifted?”

Kiara was quiet for longer than I’d have liked. I knew she was alive at least. She moved and shifted and breathed and was warm.

I stole a glance as we neared a ridge.

“Hold on.”

I sped up, this was the quickest way out of here and less easy to follow. She tensed, but her good arm snaked around my waist. I pulled her in tighter, praying this wouldn’t hurt her.

We grew closer and closer.

“Here we go,” I said and jumped.

My wolf was enjoying every second of this, even if he wasn’t in control, making this so much easier. Quicker than having to have her hold on to our fur. He simply loved she was here, and I wasn’t fucking it all up, yet.

“Tell me, Kiara. When was the last time your wolf was able to come out of her shell?”

My feet were firmly planted, and I was already pushing us forward before she finally spoke.

“I don’t know. I’d only ever shifted a couple of times and each time I was punished. They were assholes. Worse than assholes and now?”

She snuggled in closer, and my wolf purred at the show of trust.

“The devil is dead,” she finally said.

I grunted. There were no words. I was so pissed off right now. They’d suppressed her wolf on top of everything and kept her from being able to heal after the beatings? No wonder there were scars on every inch of her body. They were fucking monsters.

My wolf snarled, but I kept that inside us. Together we fumed. The loathing and hatred for that pack grew with every passing minute.

“He enslaved you? Drugged you? Kept your wolf in a near coma?”

I felt the nodding as her hair tickled against my skin.

“Great people you are marrying into, right?”
