“No Devon. I am trying to get it through your head that they are the enemy. It doesn’t matter what the daughter did or didn’t do. We don’t need any further reason to break the pact. I don’t want you over thinking this shit. Treat it just like all the others. They will be on our land. We can take them out quickly and without consequence.”

I pulled my hands into my side and waited for the rage to calm and my heart to slow. Fuck. He was right.

“I am overthinking this and why? Because my father. Because he’s gotten so far into my fucking head.” I knew why.

“Colt, we need to be different. We can’t just condemn them all for being who they are. We need to be better than my father and my grandfather.”

He came over and clapped me on the back.

“That’s the Devon I know. Just know I am certain they are all guilty. Now let me go get my date and I’ll see you out there.”

I watched him walk back into the pack house and this time my wolf surfaced and pushed me to follow but at the same time howls sounded from the border. They were fucking here, and I had to greet them.

I gave the door a second look and then followed duty. Why did it feel like Colton was going to do something that would piss me off?

Straightening my back I forced my stubborn wolf to focus on the task at hand. Lights flashed between trees as vehicles pulled into the driveway.

I stood my ground flanked by several of my best warriors and nearly screamed for my second, except here he was. Colt was there next to me. He would never let me down.

“That was fast. Where’s your date?” I asked.

He leaned in.

“She’s with Sarah, I was just messing with you. I actually just needed to grab some of the younger pups. Fuckers don’t seem to understand how important this is. Now let’s do this. I wouldn’t really abandon you for a female. You know that, you asshole.”

I tried to smile. I did know that, but it was just odd timing. Odd timing that he had a date. He was more single than me.

We all turned to the sound of the doors opening and closing. Boots crunched on the gravel. The pack house was hidden far from any main roads and the grounds here were mostly gravel. We could hear them all coming a mile away.

I refused to show any weakness here nor would I show my agitation with these assholes. Perhaps what my father in all his sweet and gentle hints had been trying to tell me was that finding my mate would give me a weakness. Well, good for him and them that I’d already been through that hell once. Nothing could break me.

“Ah, you must be my future son-in-law?” asked the graying man approaching me. The muscles in my arms corded as I tensed. Maybe I couldn’t be broken, but he could be.

“I am the future alpha of the Black Creek Pack. You would be the alpha of the Cripple Creek Pack?”

He smiled, but fuck did he smell of rotten eggs like every lie he’d been spouting for years had permanently ruined the scent of him and his wolf.

“You may call me Byron, let’s drop the formalities if we are to be united soon.”

My skin crawled, and my wolf snarled. I tried to keep him quiet, but this was fucking hell.

“Daddy, this is amazing.”

A young female came up next to my newfound friend, Byron.

“Ah, yes Nessa sweetheart.” He paused and brought her up next to him.

How did I not fucking know her name was Nessa? I already hated her.

“Alpha Devon, may I call you Devon? This is my daughter.”

I couldn’t recoil, or they would know something was up.

“I assumed by the way she called you dad. But thank you for the introduction. This is my second, Colton. That is my father, the current alpha.”

I made a pointed turn to my father expecting something or anything to show that he was offended. He was damn near always offended. However, by the fucking joy bleeding through the pack connection something told me he was waiting for the show to start.

Colt? Watch my damn father.
