“Perhaps. But after you take over, that is your problem, not mine.”

The man made my entire body vibrate with anger as I fought to hold back my wolf.

I needed to remain calm. Breathing in, I could still recall her scent even without her here. She’d soaked into my soul. Gotten under my skin since I’d seen her as a mere girl. Hell, she was under my skin the second she showed up in that damn bar covered in bruises and cuts.

Devon?

I opened up the connection to Colton, my best friend. I needed to stop being so damn angry, but seeing him with her had pushed me over that damn edge of self-control.

Meet me out front.

“Father, you’ll excuse me as I go and gather the pack.”

I gave him a bow of my head, but what I really wanted to do was rip out the old shriveled heart still beating in his chest. Challenging him like the old ways would be so much more satisfying. Fucking prick.

What was stopping me? Duty? Honor? The fact that there were far worse power hungry fathers alive.

I stormed out of the office and walked to the porch out front. Most of the pack was already in the clearing where tables and lights had been set up to look like we were a welcoming and generous pack. And we perhaps were if you weren’t a pack of fucking assholes. Perhaps the daughter would be reasonable and this would all be dealt with politely. Some blood shed to help with order and restructure, but perhaps the mating would not be needed.

“Devon, there you are.”

I turned around and caught Colton smiling like he’d just done something he knew would piss me off.

“Why do you look happy?”

He flipped me off.

“I’m allowed to be happy.”

I nodded but had other things to worry about.

“What are the chances that the daughter isn’t into their shitty practices? Do you think we can use her against the alpha?”

Colton’s smile dropped.

“Based on the information we’ve gotten from the team, she doesn’t seem to care. Now, they never witnessed her doing anything sorted. But she’s pretty fucking spoiled.”

I couldn’t stand here in this damn suit, but I didn’t have a choice so I just paced instead.

“They hurt Kiara. They sold her. I want to rip out the alphas’ throat.”

Colton leaned against the side of the house letting me pace.

“That is Kiara’s word against theirs.”

That made me stop. I slowly pivoted on my heel stalking forward.

“What the hell benefit would she have to lie?”

He shrugged.

“To mate the future alpha?”

I swallowed the anger and stopped myself.

“Are you trying to make me question everything?”

Colton ducked away from my fist before I punched him.
