Violet lets out a soft melodic laugh. “Very true.”

I take another sip of my coffee and check the clock again. Margot is a total monster when her worker bees are late. “Oh, have you seen my dad?”

Violet’s eyes widen just a little. “No, why do you think I would have seen him?”

Okaaay.Someone is acting a little defensive. “Maybe because you work with him? I was trying to get a hold of him yesterday so I could schedule a dinner with Mom but he didn’t answer his phone or any of my texts.”

Violet’s cheeks turn pink and she fixes her eyes on her coffee mug like it’s the most interesting thing in the world.

Huh.

I wonder if this has something to do with the crush she used to have on Dad. I mean, she never explicitly told me she was crushing on him, but she’s my best friend. I could tell. But I thought she had gotten over it, she’s basically avoided anything that has to do with him for the past six months, plus she’s dating Tyler now.

If I thought she still had a little crush on him, I wouldn’t be trying to get my parents back together. Well, in front of her at least. No way, she’s totally over it. I mean, Tyler is super cute and seems nice. Plus, they have a ton in common. I could always ask her about it, but I don’t want to embarrass her. I know she would be mortified if I knew how she felt about Dad.

“Why don’t you invite Tyler to the party this weekend?” I ask.

She looks like she’s surprised by the suggestion, but I don’t know why. “Yeah, maybe,” she says distractedly before a soft smile curls her lips. “So, anything new with hot cop next door?”

Now it’s my turn to look away. “How should I know? That man is a total pain in the ass, I’m thankful every day I don’t run into him.”

“Uh huh, sure.”

“Don’t take that tone with me, Vi,” I tease her. “Sure he’s kinda cute but he’s not my type.” I shrug and take my cup to the sink and rinse it out.

“Really. And what type is that? I don’t remember you ever being so picky.”

“The type with a kid. Besides the fact that I can’t stand the little mongrels, men like that are always looking to settle down.”

“And that’s not you.” She says it more as a skeptical observation than a question and I turn my head so she can’t see my face. Violet isn’t as annoyingly perceptive as Hollie, but she’s still my best friend and can read me like a book. I blame it on her literature degree.

Violet walks over and gives me a hug which I return whole-heartedly. She’s so small her head barely clears my chest and our hugs always make me feel protective of her.

She grabs her bag from the hallway and gives me a wave as she’s heading out the door. “If I see your dad today, I’ll let him know you’re looking for him.”

“Thanks, sweetie.” I wave back before she shuts the door. I grab my own purse and quickly eyeball the contents, making sure I have everything I need for the day. My hand is on the doorknob when I do my quick check out the window, just like I’ve done every single day since Carson moved in. I know it’s silly to be avoiding him, but I can’t help it. He drives me crazy and turns me on at the same time which is a confusing as fuck combination. Add in what happened last night and there’s no way I can face him. For just a second, I let my mind flash back to the alley and I let out a groan thinking about how I threw myself at him and practically begged him to make me come.

The coast is clear and just as I’m turning the doorknob there’s a flash of movement in my periphery coming from the direction of his house. In a blind panic, I immediately drop straight to the floor and curse when I bang my knee against thehardwood. I know this is ridiculous but that doesn’t stop me from army crawling towards the window.

When I finally make it across the room, I can barely catch my breath. Maybe I should go to the gym once in a while because this is embarrassing. I’m just glad there’s nobody here to see it.

Ever so slowly, I raise my head until I’m just peeking over the windowsill. Carson’s car is in sight and when I look over to the driver’s side there’s a pair of moss green eyes staring right at me.

Shit, shit, shit.

I immediately drop back down to the floor like some kind of deranged ninja and realize now I look even crazier than before.

Okay, Bianca. Just. Act. Casual.I quickly bring myself to my feet and dust off the front of my outfit. Gross. One of us really needs to vacuum. I know he’s still looking at me. I can feel his eyes on my body like it’s his touch. Spying my purse, I lean down and pick it up before saying way too loudly. “Oh look, here’s my purse! I wondered where I left it.”Totally convincing.

I chance another glance out the window and see he’s smiling at me with a crooked smirk on his face. He slowly raises his hand and gives me a casual wave. Before I can say or do anything else stupid, I spin around on my heel and walk back into my bedroom where there are no windows facing his place.

Chapter Eight

Carson

By the time I finally made it home this morning I only had time to shut my eyes for twenty minutes before I needed to go pick up Oliver this morning and get him to school. Luckily, I wasn’t on again until this afternoon so as soon as I drop him off I’m coming home and passing out.

I spent those precious few minutes of rest staring at the ceiling and trying to imagine what was under that tiny dress Bianca had on last night. My hands might have been all over her, but I didn’t get to see a thing. What color were the panties I swept aside to give me access to her dripping pussy? What color are her nipples? Are they a dusky rose or a rich brown mocha? What is that plump ass going to look like when I’m fucking her from behind? That’s a good one I’ll have to tuck away for later.
