“A lot happened to you yesterday,” Jace said. “You lost a friend and your home and were taken to a different place to stay. It’s a lot for a person to deal with.”
“I like it here.”
Jace nodded. “Good. We want you to feel safe and happy here.”
“I’ve never felt safe.”
His brows puckered. “Ever?”
She shook her head. “No, my parents were into each other and alcohol. I think they forgot about me sometimes.”
“Jesus, that sucks,” Mack said.
That pissed Jace off. He would find out everything he could about them.
She nodded.
“Well, here you’re safe. We won’t let anything happen to you.”
“Okay.”
“Today, we need to get you clothes.”
“I don’t want anything.”
One of his brows rose. “You want to go around naked?” Jace asked.
She sputtered and then laughed. “No.”
“Then you need clothes, sweetheart.”
“I don’t want you to spend money on me,” she said.
“Even if it would make us happy?” Mack asked.
She studied both before she sighed and nodded.
“Good girl.” Jace pressed a kiss to her forehead. “How about we get you fed?”
“Have you guys eaten?”
Jace shook his head. “We wanted to eat with you. This will be our first meal together.”
“I can’t remember the last time I ate with someone. Maybe when I was in school. Mirna didn’t like people around her, so I ate and slept in my home I made alone.”
Jace hid his shock. This woman had been alone for far too long.
“How does French toast sound?”
“I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never had it.”
Jace tried to hide his anger and dismay by beating some eggs. “I think you’re going to have a lot of firsts, and we’re thrilled to be the ones to show you.”
Her eyes widened. “Really?”
Mack chuckled. “Yes, really.”
Jace couldn’t take his eyes off her as she ate. She enjoyed every bite.
