“This is the yummiest thing I’ve ever tasted,” she said.

“Good. It’s one of my favorites,” Jace said.

The three cleaned up the kitchen and walked into the office, where they had two desks set up facing each other. Mack grabbed his laptop and met them on the sofa. They went through several online stores and bought everything they thought she needed. Jace also planned to talk to some of his friends that had girlfriends. They might have some ideas they missed. They wanted Kaylin to have everything she needed or wanted. If it were up to them, she’d feel cherished and loved for the rest of her life.

Chapter Six

Things settled over the next few days, and Mack could tell that Kaylin relaxed more with every day that passed. When he got home from work, he walked through the front door and saw her on the sofa always reading the same book.

“Babe, we have a lot of books. You don’t have to keep reading that one,” he said. He was shocked by the look of embarrassment and devastation she quickly tried to hide.

He sat down next to her and lay a hand on her thigh. “Sweetheart, what’s going on?”

She shook her head. “Nothing.”

He studied her expression. “When you’re ready to talk about it, we’ll be waiting.”

She nodded and went back to reading.

His brows snapped together when he saw the page she was on. It was the same one every time. He needed to talk to Jace before he said anything. Mack sat at his desk and studied her when she wasn’t looking, and not once did she turn the page. What the fuck?

Later that night, while Kaylin was watching a movie, Mack called Jace aside.

“I’m not sure what’s going on with her, but she reads the same page of the same book every day.”

Jace sighed and nodded. “I’ve noticed that. What do you think is wrong?”

Mack shrugged. “I’ve no idea. When I said something, she looked embarrassed and sad.”

“Let’s take her into the office tomorrow and introduce her to some girls. She needs friends, and I think it will help her feel more secure, and then she’ll talk to us. She might even open herself to them quickly. I’ve heard that littles can do that with other ones.”

“We can try,” Jace said.

Mack would do anything to keep those expressions off her face.

The next morning, Mack held Kaylin’s hand and pulled her into their office. They stopped at a desk inside the door.

“Whose desk is this?” Kaylin asked.

Mack shrugged as he went through the stack of mail. “It’s supposed to be our secretary’s.”

“You have one?”

“No. We haven’t needed one yet. Maybe you could help us out sometimes.”

He watched the color seep from her face, and then she turned her head away.

“Oh, I don’t think I’d be good with that. I can clean for you.”

Mack pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “No worries. We’ll find something for you to do.”

She nodded and then followed him into his office. “Where is Jace?”

“He’s picking up a few people to bring here.”

“Do you want me to go back home?”
