She washed her hands and then brushed her teeth. When she opened the door, both men were standing in the hallway and talking with each other.

Jace held out a hand. “Are you ready?”

“Yes.” She took his hand. He pulled her into the room and lifted the blanket.

“Hop in,” he said.

She scrambled in and lay on the pillow. He made sure the blanket covered her and then bent and kissed her forehead.

“Get some sleep. We’ll take care of everything tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

He moved away, and Mack walked to her and kissed her forehead, too.

“Good night, baby. Yell if you need us. We’ll keep our doors open so we can hear you.”

“Okay. Thank you.”

Mack turned off the light and closed the door until it was only open a few inches. It let in enough light for her to see the room clearly. The darkness and quietness of the room relaxed her. The mattress and pillow felt like Heaven and nothing she’d ever experienced before. She closed her eyes and sighed.

The first wave of grief hit her unexpectedly. She knew she would cry for Mirna, but it hit her so fast and hard that it took her breath away. She buried her face in the pillow and sobbed until she couldn’t anymore. Reaching for a tissue, she wiped her face and then blew her nose. She flipped the pillow over on the dry side and closed her eyes.

By the time the dawn light was creeping over the horizon, she’d had three other bouts of breakdowns, so by morning, she was exhausted.

She was vaguely aware of the guys stopping in to check on her throughout the night, and she was glad they hadn’t caught her crying at the time. It freaked her out to feel certain emotions. Crying was one thing her father hated with a passion, and she usually got smacked if she cried. So, she learned to hide somewhere if she had to. But the night before, there were a few times she had wanted to run into the men’s arms and let them hold her and tell her everything would be okay.

Because when she looked at her future, all she saw was an abyss of emptiness.

Chapter Five

Jace leaned against the kitchen counter and drank his coffee.

“I checked on her several times. I kept thinking she’d break down and be sobbing, but every time I saw her, she was sleeping. I could tell she’d been crying. I just wish she’d come to one of us.”

Mack nodded. “Same here. We’ll be here for her and we’ll make sure Mirna has a nice burial. That will help Kaylin get closure. We’ll need to get some clothes together for her today. I say we stay home. We can do most of the work from here.”

Jace nodded. His head turned when he heard a sound from the doorway. His first glance at her made his heart pound and his body heat. She looked like an angel with the long white shirt that went to her knees. The sun shone through the fabric showing him her figure. Her tousled hair made her look like she’d been well-loved the night before. Her face was a bit puffy, and her eyes were swollen from lack of sleep and crying, but she was still one of the prettiest women he’d ever seen.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” Jace said.

She stood uncertain in the kitchen doorway. “Come here, baby,” Mack said.

She walked over to him and gasped when he pulled her down onto his lap.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Holding you. You looked like you needed a hug.”

Jace grinned at the confusion on her face.

Mack rested her against his chest and ran his hand up and down her back.

“How are you doing?” he asked.

She shrugged. “I’m fine.”

Jace walked over to the table and sat down in the chair next to them. She jumped when he placed his hand on her leg, but otherwise, she didn’t move.
