“Glad we packed the car earlier.” He nods his head, sliding on his shoes. “Let me get dressed and we can head out.”
Each pack is structured differently, but I’m glad I have Dion. We might not be like Freddie and Kenji. He’s honestly become my best friend, something I thought I would never have. Emily gave me that.
I dress quickly in some joggers and a sweater. Grabbing my hat, gloves and boots before Dion comes down the hall with a wailing Binx.
“Do they make cat Xanax?” Dion asks. I raise my eyebrow, honestly something to look into for when we need to take him places.
“Thankfully, it’s a short drive.”
As soon as we step out the front door and my feet crunch on a thick slab of snow, I curse loudly before grabbing the shovels and walking down the street to the car.
Dion clears enough off so he can warm up the car and put Binx in the backseat. We work together to dig the SUV out.
“I swear these motherfuckers just plow the streets, not giving a single fuck about anyone’s shit.” I’m definitely in a mood. The sun isn’t up. My girl is in heat and the last thing I want to be doing is clearing snow from my car. “Fucking Massachusetts Department of Transportation can suck my ass,” I mumble and Dion laughs behind me.
“She’s probably sleeping. She’s with Kenji and Freddie. Don’t stress yourself out.”
I take a deep breath and dig the shovel into the useless piles of white fluff.
It took us twenty minutes to clear out the car and now my grip is so tight that my knuckles are nearly white. The snow still comes down in thick fluffy flakes and Binx’ bitching in the backseat doesn’t help.
It’s just over four in the morning and thankfully the roads are mostly clear. Except for the asshole driving with his high beams on in my direction.
Not giving a fuck how cold it is or that it’s snowing violently, I roll my window down enough to give him the finger. “Fuckin’ jack off.”
I roll the window back up and Dion just shakes his head at me. He doesn’t approve, but I didn’t see him offering to drive either.
“It’s going to be weird for her not to have heats for a while, I mean if everything goes well,” Dion says.
It’s the first time he’s really brought it up. I know Kenji and I have been obsessed with this idea. I knew Dion wanted to grow our family, but he hadn’t outwardly expressed his interest.
“It will be weird, but exciting.”
“Yeah,” Dion says, smiling as he turns the heat up. My little outburst made the cabin chilly.
“What did you get her for Christmas?” I ask him.
“I’m not telling you.”
“Why not?”
“Cause you tell Emily everything. She will ask and you’ll give up my secret right away. No way.”
My lips form a firm line. He’s not wrong. “Fine, I’ll tell you what I got her.”
“Don’t want to know,” he replies back easily.
“Fine. But did you pack the coffee?” I ask him.
“Of course I packed the coffee. You think we could all deal with you during her heat without caffeine? No fucking thanks.”
Fair enough. Part of me hopes she’s sleeping and getting rest. The other part of me wants her to be awake with a big smile on her face, waiting for us to get there.
I love Emily how she is all the time. But Emily in heat feels like a special treat. When she’s bossy and cursing at me. I’m not going to lie, it does something for me. It’s probably the novelty of it, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
The tires handle all the icy slopes and slushy snow as we finally pull into the driveway of the house.
Binx makes his need to get the fuck out of the car clear as day. Dion grabs his carrier and litter box and takes that into the house first. The amount of shit in the car is daunting. I debate bringing it all in now or later. I sigh as I decide not to procrastinate. If we don’t do it now, then we will have to when Emily is in heat and there’s nothing that could make me leave the house.
