“I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t.”
Tessa felt herself shaking but couldn’t seem to control it.
Gage took her arm. “Let’s go home. Maybe Brylee knows who you are.”
Oh, God. She’d met Brylee a few times, so she would know her. Maybe she could say something to her before she talked to her daddy.
Chapter Sixteen
The drive there was mostly quiet. Gage tried to ask her questions and engage her in a conversation, but she just crossed her arms over her chest.
Gage sighed again. “You’re one of those stubborn ones.”
“What?”
“You’re a stubborn little.”
She looked down at the hands in her lap and shook her head. “No, sir. I’m one of the unlovable ones.”
“That’s not it at all. Honey, I’d bet there was a miscommunication. If you’d only give your daddy a chance.”
Tessa pressed her lips together.
“All right,” he sighed.
Tessa looked out her car window when the fancy car they were riding in pulled into a curved driveway and stopped in front of a humungous house.
“Come on, honey.”
She took Gage’s hand and let him lead her up the stone steps. The door opened before they got to it.
“Good evening, sir.”
The man was tall and thin. His hair was white, and his eyes were bright blue. She knew he was an older man, but his face didn’t have the wrinkles she thought it would.
“Honey, this is Wallace. He says he’s a butler, but he’s more of the boss around here.”
The older man snorted.
“Wallace. Would you happen to know who this is?”
The butler shook his head. “No, I’m sorry. She’s never visited here.”
“Okay, I’ll keep trying. Keep your ears open for someone missing a little.”
“I certainly will, sir.”
Tessa moved away from him.
“Will you call Brylee down?”
“Oh, she’s on her way. I think she secretly has a driveway alarm because she knows when you get home every time.”
Gage chuckled. “Yes, she does.”
Tessa heard a scream, and both men yelled at Brylee to slow down as she raced down the steps.
“Daddy!” Brylee threw herself into Gage’s arms, and they kissed passionately.
