“Hey, man. I got home from work, and something’s wrong with Tessa.”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know. She says it’s her period, but she just had that. She says she doesn’t feel good, but it looks more like sadness than illness. Has Jade said anything?”
“Not a word. Hold on.”
Nate heard Cole yell for Jade and then him talking to her.
“Hello,” Jade said.
“Hello, Jade. Hey, I’m worried about Tessa. She says she doesn’t feel good, but I think she looks sadder. Did anything happen today?”
Jade paused.
“Did she say anything to you?” Jade asked.
“No, nothing.”
“I don’t know why she’d be sad. I can talk to her if you want.”
“She’s resting right now. Maybe later.”
“We’ll figure this out,” Jade said.
“Oh, I know that, but the thought of my baby in any kind of pain is driving me crazy.”
“So…”
“What?” Nate asked when she paused.
“You do care about her?”
It felt like she’d smacked him across the face. “Of course I do. Why would you even question that?”
“I was just asking, dude. Mellow.”
“Your daddy needs to beat you more,” Nate growled.
Jade laughed because they both knew Cole would never hurt her. “Have her call me when she wakes up.”
“I will.”
Nate hung up and took a long sip before he rested his head back. What in the fuck was going through her mind? He was doing everything he could to make her feel cared for. It was pure torture to hold her every night and not be able to fuck her the way he wanted.
He was thinking about her and all the things she’d been through lately and didn’t want to add to it. After he finished his drink, he walked into the kitchen to make dinner. When he was finished, he went to get her and found her wide awake and staring at the wall.
“Hey.”
Her body jerked, and she reluctantly looked at him.
“I’ve got dinner ready. Why don’t you come and eat?”
“I’m not hungry,” she said.
“You’ll eat a little bit. It’s been hours since you had lunch.”
“How do you know that?” she asked.
