“Anything you want … it’s yours.”

Against my will, my whole body heated at his proximity. I bit my cheek to focus on the task at hand.

I pushed his jeans past his rock-hard thighs and shivered when I bent down lower.

His length was impressive, to say the least, confined in his boxer shorts, and an ache initiated in the pit of my stomach. I bit my inner cheek again.

“Whatever you want.”

“Right now, I want you to be silent. Lift your foot.”

He did as he had been told and then lifted his other foot. After I took off his shoes, finally, his jeans were off.

“There you go.” I stood and searched the floor for something interesting. I focused on anything but his eyes, which I knew were on me. I shuffled back, reaching for my jacket before turning to the door.

“Syd …”

At the sound of my name, I looked up, locking eyes with him. Lust and want swam behind his eyes, mirroring mine. Or maybe I was imagining it all.

A few moments of intense silence passed between us before I swallowed. Hard.

“Yeah, I’ll meet you outside after your assessment to drive you home.”

“Syd,” he called out again, but I was out the freaking door.

I rested by the bare white wall and let out one big exhale. I closed my eyes and practiced my breathing exercises I’d taught myself to use whenever I went to chemo with my mom.

In through the nose. One … two … three.

Out through the mouth. One … two … three.

I needed a long, coldshower. The reason that I was feeling all this attraction toward Austin was simply because I hadn’t been touched by a man in a long while and my hormones were running rampant.

Yep, that was it.

The only reason.

Home. Then cold shower.

Right now, I needed an ice-cold coffee while I waited.

CHAPTER9

SYDNEY

The hospital was a zoo. From the cafeteria floor-to-ceiling windows, I peered down, witnessing multiple news station vans parked in the parking lot. Really? I mean, there was much more interesting news than Austin Callaway getting into a fight and hurt. What had this world come to?

My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I placed my iced coffee on the table and plucked it out.

“Sydney.” It was Serena. Her normal oldest-sister tone pushing through the receiver. “When Lyria called me to tell me what happened, I ran out of my meeting.”

I exhaled a heavy breath. “Austin said it’s all over social media. Is it?”

Her voice was grave. “It is. And why did you have your shirt off?”

“I was trying to break the fight up.”

“Did it work?”
