“Yeah. See you then.”
Shauna headed out, leaving me alone.
And all I could think about was whether or not April had said something. I could only guess what Shauna’s reaction would be if she had.
What a mess.
I tried to busy myself in my office, but to no avail. After accepting that I wasn’t getting a damn thing done, I headed downstairs for a drink.
And right at the moment I reached the second floor, I spotted April coming out of her room.
Shit. I’d figured I’d have the night to think about it all, to decide how I was going to handle things. No such luck.
“Hey,” I said. “Have a good night?”
“Um, it was fine.” Her tone was cold, distant. “Good night with Willa?”
“We had fun, yeah. Girl won’t stop asking about you.”
A small smile formed on her lips before vanishing. “She’s sweet. I’ll get up early tomorrow to make sure she’s ready for the day.”
She was trying to play it cool, but there was major tension in her voice.
“Anyway, I’m going to bed. Good night.”
Whatever she’d been in the process of doing, she stopped and turned back toward her room and was soon back inside.
I’d screwed things up—obviously.
Only thing that remained to be seen was whether or not I’d screwed myself over in a way I couldn’t take back.
