He slumped in his seat, the gravity of the situation finally taking hold.
“We’re fucked. Totally fucked.”
It was hard, hard as hell to keep my composure knowing Willa and April were in danger. But I did my best.
“We’re not totally fucked. We give them Anton, and we can start over again. It won’t be easy, but we can pull it off. And we can do it together, as brothers.”
He turned his eyes to me, raising an eyebrow. “This woman,” he said. “You’re…really crazy about her, huh?”
“Crazy enough to risk it all. You and Willa, Scott—you’re my family. And I’d do anything for the both of you. And April? I never thought I’d feel this way again after what happened to Megan. But I do. And all the money, all the power—it means nothing when put up against love.”
A small smile took hold. “I never thought I’d hear you talk like this, big brother.”
“But you’re hearing it now. We can do this, Scott. You and me. We can do the right thing for once in our lives.”
More silence. Then, finally, he nodded. “OK. Let’s…let’s try.”
“Good.”
I picked up my phone and sent a text to Agent Martinez. She responded, and moments later there was a knock at the door. I got up and answered, and there she was.
“Mr. Ryder,” she said with a pleased smile. “You ready to do this?”
“More ready than I’ve ever been in my life.”
