A man walks into the room from the back. “Mr. Blake, I’m so sorry. I thought I had a few more days to get everything complete.”
“It’s fine, Carl. This was a surprise trip. Do you mind excusing us?” I ask him.
He looks between the two of us and grabs his tools and walks out the front door. “Sure. I’ll be back to finish tomorrow.”
I nod my head at him, and then look back at Krissy.
She’s looking at everything with pure awe in her face.
“How did you do this? How did you know?” she asks me. “Everything, oh my God, everything I wanted is here.”
I walk slowly toward her and her eyes widen the closer I get. I use my thumbs to dry her cheeks. “Krissy, I fell in love with you in high school. But I was always the nerd with glasses and I didn’t have the guts to ask you out then. I haven’t been able to get you off my mind since then. So, yes, the last four years of your life, I have tried my best to help you reach your dreams. I’ve never gotten you anything you didn’t deserve or cheated so you could get an award. I just did little things to help you.”
“But how? How did you know?” she asks me, gesturing around the room.
“Your Pinterest board. You have a wish list. I got it all for you.” I shrug. “I wanted you to have everything you ever wanted.”
She walks away from me and looks around the room. I can tell she’s deep in thought, and I try not to force myself on her. But being this close to her and not touching her is killing me.
“Well, I have almost everything I want.” She walks back toward me.
“There’s more in the back, but whatever you want, we’ll get it,” I promise her.
“What I want doesn’t cost any money.” She lifts her shoulder.
“Honey, I want you to have everything… whatever that is. Tell me what it is and I’ll get it for you.” If I’m reading her right, I can feel her softening and hope flares in my chest.
She nods her head. “Good. I want you, Jared. That’s all I want. All I’ll ever need. Just you.”
A huge smile takes over my whole face. “You already have that. Forever.”
Epilogue
Three Months Later
Jared
She’s sitting in the office of her studio, stressed to the max and tears are falling down her face. She doesn’t hear me come in until I’m gathering her in my arms and sitting down with her in my lap.
“What’s wrong, honey?” I ask her, but I already know what it is.
“I don’t know. I’m so stressed out. I’m planning this wedding and I was trying to take the pictures today of this sweet baby, and I couldn’t stop crying. I’m a mess and I don’t know why.” She sobs into my shoulder.
“Are you happy, Krissy? Happy with me?” I ask her hesitantly.
“What? Of course I am. You make me happier than I’ve ever been in my life,” she whispers and starts sobbing again.
I rub her back. “Can I tell you something, honey?”
She nods her head against me. “What?”
“You’re pregnant, baby. You’re going to be a momma!” I tell her softly.
“What?” she exclaims, looking up at me.
“Honey, you’ve been so busy with everything, but you’ve only had your period one time since we’ve been together. I’m pretty sure you’re pregnant.” I smile and kiss her lips.
“How do you even know that?”
