“A what?!” exclaimed Sam. “Already?”

“I don’t think I’m pregnant,” I said vehemently. I was too young, and I still hadn’t figured out my life.

“I’ll go buy the pregnancy test,” said Sam flustered as he ran out of the bathroom. “Wesley, you stay and watch her.”

“I will,” said Wesley.

I slowly got up and, with Wesley’s help, walked back to the bed. I heard the front door slam as Sam rushed out to buy a pregnancy test.

“Do you want a baby?” I asked.

“We all do,” said Wesley. “An alpha’s job is to procreate, so this will bring joy to us all and the island. Each birth is announced and celebrated. How about you? You don’t look too excited. You must have conceived a while ago.”

“I just don’t know what I’m doing with my life right now,” I said. “I don’t think I’m ready.”

I imagined holding a little baby, taking care and feeding them.

It sounded too scary to think about right now. The enormity of the responsibility I was going to have was overwhelming. And we just claimed each other last night. I was freshly mated to this pack.

After the dizziness passed, I brushed my teeth with Wesley standing protectively behind me in case I fell, even though I reassured him constantly that I was feeling a little better. Wesley helped wash me in the shower without doing any of the freaky stuff he usually did. He was treating me gently, and I was grateful. My stomach hurt from time to time.

Hearing the front door, I quickly turned off the water, and Wesley grabbed a towel, bundling me inside it.

“I have the pregnancy test!” shouted Sam as he bounded up the stairs. He came into the bathroom, holding the pink box in his hand.

“I feel a little better now,” I said. “Do I really need to take it?”

“Yes,” said Wesley, opening the package for me. “We’ll wait outside the door.”

We sat on the bed, waiting for the timer to go off. I left the pregnancy test on the bathroom sink after taking it.

The little bathrobe I wore didn’t stop the chills from going through me. I was feeling cold and panicky. What would my parents think? They would freak the hell out and probably banish me forever. But, heck, I was probably already banished.

Sam wrapped his arm around me. His arm was large and warm.

“If she’s pregnant, do you want a boy or a girl?” Sam asked Wesley.

“I wouldn’t mind either, but alpha boy would be a nice addition to our family,” said Wesley.

I rolled my eyes. They sounded a little too excited at the prospect. I didn’t think I was pregnant. It was probably the steak from last night not sitting well with me. Just a little food poisoning, that’s all.

I stared at the timer on Sam’s phone as he held it between us.

It was getting closer—one more minute.

My breathing accelerated as I watched the timer.Three. Two. One.

“It’s time,” said Sam.

I walked to the bathroom, the men following behind me. Lifting the test, I stared at the word displayed on the screen:

Pregnant

“Oh my god,” I said, holding my mouth in shock.

“What does it say?” asked Wesley breathlessly. I held the test up toward them. Straight away, big smiles came across their faces. I was in pure shock. I know I shouldn’t be in shock since I did nothing to prevent it, but I didn’t think it could happenthisfast.

Dizziness blurred my vision again, and I held the counter for balance. Wesley rushed over to me, holding my arm.
