My heart leaps at Matteo’s deep voice.

Stupid man.

But that was a good question. I definitely don’t feel fantastic, that’s for sure, but I don’t hurt as much as I expected I would.

“I’m fine,” I croak, my voice raspy with sleep. I shift around to see where he’s at and immediately regret it as pain shoots up the entire right side of my torso.

Nope, it definitely hurts like hell. I hiss through my teeth. Shit. That’s bad.

“That’s what I thought.” He gets out of the chair and comes over to me.

“What . . . what are you doing in here?”

“Making sure you don’t die on my watch.”

“How reassuring.”

“You’re welcome.”

Is he this infuriating on purpose?

He steps up to the bed and reaches for the sheet.

With an overwhelming sensation of dread running through my veins, I grab it before he can and hold on to it with all my might. “What are you doing?”

He gives me an exasperated look but stops his advance. “I want to check your wound.”

“Oh.”

“Also, I might need to give you a sponge bath.”

My chest and face instantly grow hot as I stare at him to see if he’s serious. “No way.”

“So you’d rather stink?”

I try to sniff myself inconspicuously, but I don’t think I succeed, since the corner of his mouth twitches. I flick my gaze at the ceiling. “Is it that bad?”

He shrugs. “Could be worse, I suppose.”

“Ugh.” I throw my arm over my eyes. This is so embarrassing.

“You can wait until tonight when we’re at the cabin and take a shower there.”

My forehead pinches together, and I move my arm just enough to peek at him. “The upstate cabin Luna mentioned?”

“Yes.”

I roll my lips together. “You’re seriously taking me out of the city?”

“Yes.”

“Do you often kidnap people?”

The corner of his mouth twitches again. “If necessary.”

Damn him. “And my dad agreed to this?”

My question wipes all expression off his face.
