The doctor chuckles at that. “Sounds about right. There’s a reason her nickname is Lunatic.”

I have no clue who they’re talking about, but I’m not sure she sounds like someone I want to meet. Since no one cares about what I want though, there’s no way out of this.

Matteo pushes out of his chair just as a woman walks through the door. She’s sporting a huge smile and seems like she might be in her mid-to-late twenties. Her hair is a beautiful honey brown, and her red dress is both sexy and sophisticated. Unlike me, this woman has a gorgeous hourglass figure.

Would I ever be able to look like that if my dad hadn’t put me on such a strict diet when I was a teenager?

She spots Matteo right away and instantly throws herself at him, engulfing him in a tight hug. “Matty.”

Matty?

He groans into her hair but returns the hug.

The doctor grins and shakes his head.

The woman’s gaze skims over me before it lands on the man sitting next to me. “Please tell me my eyes aren’t deceiving me. Ash Rylant in the flesh?”

“Hey, Luna.”

Luna Lunatic. How precious.

She walks over to Ash and brushes her fingertips along his shoulders until she stands next to my head and bends down. “And Gemma Fiore.” Her gaze flickers over to my wound before focusing back on me. “I heard about the shooting. Are you okay?”

My brain feels like it’s ready to explode, my life suddenly full of puzzle pieces I’m trying to connect and information I need to catch up on.

Such a loaded question. Are you okay?

Honestly, I have no freaking idea.

Three weeks ago, I was forced to marry a man, someone I barely knew or liked, who cheated on me before the reception was even over, and ended up dead a couple of hours later. Oh, and that was after I made out with a total stranger, just because he lit a fire in me no one else ever has. All with a single look. Then I repeated that same mistake today and came all over his fingers, right before his engagement to my cousin, and best friend, was announced. The same one who got kidnapped only minutes later when the Russians attacked my family’s bar and I got shot in the process. And now I’m being held prisoner by my cousin’s fiancé.

I don’t think I’d call that okay.

But the only thing that escapes my mouth is a snort while I blink at her. “Not really.”

She purses her lips. “I didn’t think so. The wound doesn’t seem too bad, so I think you’ll be okay, at least physically. Right, Doc?”

The tips of Ash’s ears slowly turn pink, but he keeps his eyes focused on my wound.

“Luna, get away from Ash. He needs to focus,” Matteo barks at her.

She shrugs but steps away. “Fine.”

“Did Dad send you?”

Wait a second. Is she his sister?

She shakes her head and walks over to the chair Matteo had been occupying and plops into it, crossing her legs. “Nope. I heard what happened and wanted to make sure you guys are okay.”

Matteo leans against the wall and crosses his muscled arms over his chest. “You know, that’s why they invented phones.”

“Thanks so much for the tip, smart-ass. You know I’d rather see you in the flesh.”

“Which you did. So you can leave now.”

Seems like I’m not the only one he’s rude to.

A real sunshine, that one.
