Laughter burbled out of me. I couldn’t help it. I felt so fucking relieved.
“That’s it? Really?” I said when I finally got control of myself. “You had me really fucking scared there.”
Jayne raised her eyebrows. “So you’re saying there’s no chance she’s having your baby?”
I paused. Well… Huh. “Um….”
“Shit, Kingston. Are you serious?” Jayne asked. “You’re fucking your nanny? Really?”
I hitched a shoulder. I wasn’t about to justify my decisions to her. Especially now. “We’re two responsible, singleadults. What I do with my dick is my business.”
“She’s an employee, King.” Jayne crossed her arms over her chest. “Did you even think about that?”
“Technically, she’s an employee of the agency I hired.”
Jayne raised her eyebrows again.
I sighed. “I know. I get it. But we’re… She’s different.”
Adam snorted.
I turned to where he stood next to the door. Honestly, I’d forgotten he was still in the room. “You got something you want to add here?”
Adam’s face flushed red. He stared back at me for a moment before he finally shook his head.
What the fuck was that?
I didn’t have time to examine it closer because Jayne spoke again.
“I think our best plan right now is ‘no comment.’”
I snorted. “That’s ironic. What was it you said last time? Something about silence making the story bigger and how that lets them control the narrative? But suddenly now ‘no comment’ is the way to go?”
“These are two totally different situations. Every woman has the right to medical privacy. Especially when they’re going to a women’s clinic.” Judging by Jayne’s expression, she really wasn’t impressed by me.
And then what she said hit me.
Medical privacy.
Women’s clinic.
Oh shit.
I knew her heartbreak over her miscarriage. She wanted a baby more than anything. “But she loves kids,” I said dully. “You should see her with Zoe. And her job before she was my nanny was all about kids. She was a teacher at a preschool. She wouldn’t…”
“I’m not saying that, Kingston.” Jayne rested her hand on my shoulder. “I’m saying that whatever is going on is personal. It’s not up for me to speculate why she made that appointment. I just wish the rest of the world thought the same. But you might want to talk to her and find out what’s going on, since you’re sleeping with her.”
I nodded numbly and after a few moments she and Adam left me alone in my trailer.
I didn’t know how to feel.
I wasn’t ready to have another baby right now. Everything with Briar was so new and not even defined. Maybe it was for the best? Then I felt like an ass for even thinking that.
Reaching for my phone, I contemplated what to even say.You were papped coming out of a women’s clinic. Everyone thinks you’re pregnant. Are you? Were you?
Nausea tickled the back of my throat.
Shit.
