His voice is low and controlled. So much so that I actually listen and lower the gun. Why the fuck do I keep doing this? He smirks, the bastard. “Now. Did the copper hit you?”

″No. An elderly patient slipped and hit me.” I fib because being honest makes me feel like an idiot. I never should have approached a combative patient, and my face is paying the price.

Callum raises his eyebrows, as if he doesn’t believe me, then huffs. “Follow me.” He steps toward the street, raising his hand, and waves. A black SUV pulls up, and he opens the door. “Get in.”

″No.”

″Yes.”

″Haven’t you ever heard of stranger danger?” I ask, stepping away. “No way, I’m not getting in there with you.”

He chuckles. “I have puppies. And candy.”

Shaking my head, I smirk. “Not my vice.”

″Hookers? Drugs?”

″Nope.”

″Wine? Do you like wine?” Callum wiggles his eyebrows, grinning.

″I do.”

″I have it. Get in. It’s too cold to walk you home. You’re not dressed properly.”

″And this is how I die.” I exhale heavily. And since it’s the theme of the night, I hop into a stranger’s SUV like the idiot that I am. I tell myself it’s because this is Murphy’s brother. But I don’t know if that’s the truth.

He slides in beside me, our knees touching. The door slams loudly, and he glances in my direction. “Well, tell him your address.”

″So you’re not my stalker, then? Shouldn’t you know it?” Turning to the driver, I give him my address.

″Tell me about your stalker.”

″What do you plan to do about it?” I don’t understand why he is being so nice to me after I pointed a gun at him, and after he’s been so rude. It doesn’t make any sense, and I am determined to figure out what his motive is.

″One of our brothers, Sean, owns a security business.”

″What? Like ADT security? With cameras and alarms and all that?”

An amused chuckle escapes his mouth. My eyes dart to his lips, so red and full, despite his beard. His eyes twinkle as he looks at me. “Aye, lass. Like ADT.”

″And what do you do?”

″I’m involved in a lot of lucrative investments.”

I nod slowly. It all sounds extremely shady, and I need to remember to ask Griffin about these Murphy brothers the next time I see him. He’ll know what’s up. He and Paddy are good friends, after all.

I bite my lip, looking out the window. I’m not sure why Callum seems to be interested in me, but I don’t trust his intentions are pure.

Chapter nine

WhenScottytoldmethat Haley was at dinner with a black eye, I didn’t think twice about showing up. I may be a murderer who doesn’t give second chances, and those who cross me, end up six feet under, but I do not condone beating women.

Men who hit their women are the worst types of cowards. They’re the kinds of men that I can’t trust. They don’t deserve to live. So, when Scotty told me she had a black eye, I had to see for myself. Whoever caused it would pay with their life.

Haley can fend for herself. She carries around a firearm, even if she needs a larger caliber, and I’m sure she can handle her own in a fight, if need be.

When I walk her to the entrance of her townhome, I expect to have to charm my way in. Paddy is right, she is skeptical and doesn’t fully trust me. I’ll have to change that if I want her as my second doctor on call.
