“Oh? Did he catch some sort of bug?” I could hear rustling sounds coming through the line, which meant she was already working on it.

“We’re not sure, but he wants to hold on until his team signs him up for insurance.”

“I’ll take care of it. Give me ten minutes. Was there someone he preferred? You know what, on second thought, never mind, I’ll find someone.” She hung up before I could tell her not to go crazy, and just seconds after, I realized that I was still running to mommy to solve my problems.

“Why did you bother your mom? See, I’m already feeling better. Let’s go get your chicken and waffles fix before brunch is over.” Ooh, I almost forgot. I jumped into the shower leaving him to take care of himself, which made him laugh for some inane reason.

Everyone seems to have a problem with my newfound love for the Sunday treat, but some days it’s about all I look forward to. People say that there are two times in a person’s life when they pack on the pounds. When you start college and when you get married. I guess that means I’ll be gaining twice the weight.

He was standing in front of his sink shaving when I walked over to mine to put my face on. I had to move some stuff around to find a new bottle of moisturizer, and that’s when I saw it. I stared in shock at the little container and felt a finger run down my spine. Well crap!

“What’s wrong?” I didn’t realize that he’d been watching me stand there like Bambi trapped in headlights.

Since he’s already warned me not to keep things from him on pain of death, and there was no real need to this time, I showed him the little fancy case I’d bought to keep the birth control pills in. The pills that I’d all but forgotten existed.

“What are those?”

“My birth control pills.”

He went back to shaving without saying a word. “Baby, you took Health Ed in that fancy school of yours, right? So, you know those things aren’t very effective unless you take them out of the pack and actually swallow them.” He’s seeking death this fine Sunday morning.

“I know that smart-ass, but I figured since you use condoms anyway, we should be safe. Plus, I forgot the damn things, okay? Now hurry up with your face, and let’s go eat; I’m starving.” I flounced out of the room and went about my business, promising myself to call the OB/GYN the next day to find out what was the best course of action since I hadn’t taken the things since the first few weeks, about six or seven months ago.

I forgot all about pills and even the fact that Cody had been sick again that morning when we met up with the others for our usual brunch fest, which always seemed to last all day, until the next morning when he jumped out of bed and made a mad dash for the bathroom to throw up again.

We had an appointment with the doctor mom had found him later today, but I was really starting to get worried.

CODY

“I told you I was okay.” We’d had to wait a few days for the results from the blood tests to come back, but I already knew there was nothing wrong with me other than an upset stomach that seemed to come and go at will. According to the results, there was nothing wrong with me though the doc was a bit befuddled because he couldn’t figure out what was causing me to throw up almost every morning for weeks now.

I didn’t feel nervous about playing ball in the pros, never have. I wasn’t bombarded with wedding plans, so it wasn’t that, and for the first time in a very long time, my dad was cancer free, so there was absolutely no reason for me to be sick like that. Still, I’d gone to give her peace of mind, which didn’t seem to work because she was looking very skeptical about the results.

“You look as though you want me to be sick.”

“Don’t be silly; I just want an explanation for your constant throwing up. It doesn’t make sense that he didn’t find anything.” She went on the computer, and I left her to her research while she mumbled and complained because her man was healthy.

Living with my girl is a treat. She’s equal parts crazy, sweet, and adorable, heavy on the crazy. Since she’s found her wings and has been flying free without interference from her family, she’s like a kid in a toy store, getting into every damn thing. If she knew this building was owned by her family and that all the tenants were level red security detail, she’d flip her shit.
