“What are you talking about?” Ethan said, pushing his hands away.

I was curious too.

“The lets-get-back-at-Sam plan. Didn’t Kate tell you? It worked like a charm. Now if you don’t mind, get the fuck out of my house before I call the cops and have you arrested for assaulting my brother and trespassing.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. He stepped forward, getting into Sam’s face. “I’m here to find out why you’re not doing right by my sister. You broke her heart five years ago to do the right thing, but now that she’s the one that’s pregnant, you want nothing to do with it?”

What the hell?

“I said get the fuck out of my house.” Sam looked ready to toss Ethan out of the house. Did he know about the pregnancy or had he not heard what Ethan said?

“Wait, what?” I stepped into the mix. “Are you saying Kate is pregnant?”

Sam looked at me and then to Ethan.

Ethan smirked. “Like you don’t know. I really wanted to kick your ass when you came back to town, but I’d hoped you would be the one person who could reach her, to help her open her heart up. But all you did was abandon her again.”

“I did no such thing. I don’t know what she’s telling you. She’s the one who left.”

He gave Sam a shove and then headed to the door. “It’s probably better if you don’t come around. You’re clearly not in your daughter’s life, so why would we expect you to be in this baby’s too?”

What?

When the door slammed behind him, he turned to me. “What the hell was he saying?”

I wasn’t sure. “I’m pretty sure he just said that Kate is pregnant.” What did he mean by not being in his daughter’s life? Did he think Chelsea was Sam’s? Hadn’t Sam cleared that up with Kate?

Sam grabbed his keys from the bowl by the door.

“Where are you going, Sam?”

“I’m going to talk to Kate.”

“I’ll come with you. I’ll drive.”

“I don’t need a chauffeur or a chaperone.”

“You do need a chauffeur. You're pissed. Let me drive you.”

On the drive to Kate's club, the Sea Siren, Sam fidgeted impatiently. “You drive like an old lady, do you know that?”

I slanted my gaze at him. “I’m ten miles over the speed limit. If I get a ticket, it will only slow us down.”

The Sea Siren wasn’t open, but when we arrived, there were a couple of cars in the parking lot indicating that staff was there.

Sam rushed out of the car, trying to open the door, but it was locked. He pounded on the door. “Open up, Kate.”

I got out of the car and leaned against it. “Maybe don’t go barging in like her brother did. We don’t want her calling the cops.”

Someone let him in. A few minutes later, he came out, still fuming. He got in the car and I drove us back to his house.

“What happened?” I finally asked after several minutes of driving.

“I can’t believe she was fucking with me the whole time.”

“You think she was toying with you?”

“What else should I think?” Sam looked at me and his expression broke my heart. “She wasn’t going to tell me about the baby.”
