I grabbed his hand and kissed it. “You’ll figure it out. You always do.”
He hummed, running his thumb over my knuckles. “You’ll be done tomorrow, right?”
“Should be. We’re running ahead of schedule, and even if we weren’t, we have to be done by Friday.”
“Reservations?”
“Yep.”
He inhaled deeply, his eyes shutting. “Okay. I’ll have Lauren move up our return. I don’t think an extra couple of days is a good idea under the circumstances.”
“Okay.”
My phone buzzed across the room, drawing both our attention.
“Get it. I need to go downstairs and sort some things out.”
“Okay.”
Luca strolled out of the room, his posture tense, but at least he wasn’t on a rampage ready to kill someone.
“Hello?”
“Is everything okay?” Ashley rushed out.
I swallowed and slumped into a chair in the corner. “Yes, yes. Everything’s alright.”
“Margot said two huge men showed up and took you away. I’m assuming she meant Luca and whatever lackey he had on you today.”
I barked out a laugh. “I’m sure Frankie would love to know he’s a lackey.” She chuckled, and I added, “But yes. They were in the area and scooped me up after the cops got done questioning us.”
“Hm.”
My eyelid twitched. “What are you thinking, Ashley?”
“Was this about, you know?”
“No!” A lie. I dialed back my intensity. “No. Unrelated as far as I know.”
I’m going to hell.
“Okay.” Her tone dripped with doubt.
“Look. I’ve decided—”
“Nope!” she interrupted me. “We aren’t talking about that right now. I’m still thinking.”
“But you’re clearly not okay—”
“Let me decide that.”
“Fine, just stop interrupting me.”
“Then stop trying to break up with me.”
“I’m trying to protect you.”
“I know.”
