“Doing what?”

“It was a surprise weekend away.”

There was a scoff and a loud thud.

“What the fuck, Luca?” Marco’s voice was muffled.

I inched down the hallway, leaning against the wall at the top of the stairs, just out of sight.

“I don’t know what the fuck’s going on, but I don’t buy this bullshit about a romantic getaway for one second.” Luca’s voice dripped with disgust.

“It’s true!” Adriana pleaded.

“You willing to put that on your life?”

My mouth went dry. The threat was obvious, and I couldn’t believe it was pointed at Adriana. She was like a sister to him, the mother of his nephew, and he was talking to her like she was the enemy.

“Yes. I put that on my life.”

I held my breath, my heart thumping violently in my chest. The silence was deafening while I waited to hear Luca’s verdict.

“Okay.”

“Thank you,” Adriana sobbed.

“Don’t make me regret this.”

“You won’t.” Marco was brave to speak up.

Footsteps coming up the stairs had me racing back to our room. Panting, I tiptoed to the bathroom and quietly shut the door. I flushed the toilet and turned on the faucet to wash my hands.

“Sasha?”

“Just a minute.”

When I opened the door, I found Luca staring out the window. “Luca?”

“I’m really struggling here.” His attention stayed on the garden.

I stood in the middle of the room, unsure of what to do.

“Marco is closer to me than any brother, but now I’m not sure if I can trust him. And he’s pulled Adriana into whatever he’s doing.”

“What—”

“Don’t. I know you were listening at the top of the stairs.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “How do you know?”

He finally looked my way, the corner of his mouth curving up. “I know you.”

“Fine.” I rolled my eyes and perched on the edge of the bed. “Did you ever consider maybe he’s protecting Adriana?”

Luca rubbed his forehead. “Great. The idea of Adriana having secrets is really helping.”

“Luca. You know whatever she has going on is probably everyday people's shit. Not . . .” I trailed off as I waved my hand around.

Luca shook his head and looked up at the ceiling. “You’re ridiculous,” he huffed. “Someone’s going after Cy, and it’s not me.” He sighed, walking over to me.
