“She would disapprove?”

“Of someone sending me love notes?” She barks a laugh that holds very little humor. “She would be furious that someone was trying to woo me when she already has my future husband picked out.”

The words make my stomach clench and I fumble for the right words. “She has you betrothed?”

“Not if I have anything to say about it.”

I frown. “Was it that douchebag that came in today?” I flinch. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to bad-mouth your fiancé.”

“He is not my fiancé,” she retorts, a spark of anger lingering beneath the surface. What would it take for me to make that spark burst into flame? I avert my gaze before my thoughts can get away from me. “Sorry. I mean, I’m trying to get out of it.”

“Gotcha,” I reply and clear my throat. Before I can suggest anything that might help her, we pull up to a bar and grill that has me eyeing Jane. It doesn’t seem like the type of place she would frequent, and I briefly wonder if she’s eating here for my benefit.

I don’t want to offend her, so instead of saying anything, I hop out and run around to her side, opening up her door and holding my hand out for her.

She smiles at me and I give her one back, feeling lighter than I’ve felt in a long time.

Chapter Ten

“It’s not always rainbows and butterflies.

It’s compromise that moves us along.”

Jane

“There’s no way this is where you normally eat lunch,” Warren comments, looking around the restaurant with wide eyes.

“Not very often, no. My mother—”

“Doesn’t approve,” Warren finishes and I smile at him.

“Right. Yes, well I figured that a lunch with my new friend had to be something fun and casual.” I follow the hostess who calls our names and we wind our way to a booth in the back. We were at a smaller hole-in-the-wall bar and grill that I had discovered after a very bad date one night, next door to here was a fine dining establishment that I do enjoy a lot, but it held some not as fun memories.

Anyway, this place here was one that quickly became one that I loved. From the old memorabilia on the walls to the excellent staff, to the incredible grass-fed local cheeseburgers… what more could you ask for?

After we’re seated, Warren dives in. “Tell me what you’re thinking as far as Note Guy.”

“Note Guy?” I ask, taking a sip of water, still glancing warily around the restaurant. I’m feeling… uncomfortable. That’s what it is. Maybe slightly embarrassed.

“He needs a name, doesn’t he? We have no clues to what his real one could be, therefore, he’s Note Guy.”

“Okay…” I say with a slight smile while admiring Warren’s. His has straight teeth behind his trimmed beard. I’ll bet he has nice lips too… I shake my head of the thought and focus. “Well, I know he works with us.”

“You know that for sure?”

“How else would he get mail to me? Without any kind of postage?”

“True.” Warren leans against the table, stroking his beard in thought. “Maybe he’s someone on your floor? Someone you see often?”

I frown and think. “There’s David, but he doesn’t strike me as the romantic type. Then there’s Mitchell but I’m pretty certain he’s gay.”

Warren looks at me with a question in his eyes. “You’re pretty sure? Or are you just making an assumption?”

“I’m not making assumptions, I’m justpretty sure.”

“Pretty sure how? Like what about him tells you, ‘I’m gay.’”
