Something hit my back tire, and we skidded, almost toppling over and sliding across the asphalt on our asses.
Motherfucker!
Skyla gripped my waist with one hand, reaching behind my back to yank my weapon free. I hollered at her to be careful, not having a clue if she knew how to shoot. To my complete shock, I watched through the mirrors as she turned, firing off the gun. The first vehicle behind us swerved, losing control as it veered off into the desert. Behind it, two assholes were now pointing guns at us.
We’d never survive if we stayed on Hwy 95.
“Hang on,” I yelled to Skyla, making a sharp turn to the left.
If I didn’t know how to handle my bike or have plenty of practice doing shit like this in the past, I probably would have crashed. Skyla screamed as we rolled across the desert, hitting cacti, tumbleweed, and sand. Behind us, the roar of engines proved two more vehicles followed.
That was when I noticed the abandoned building outside of Tonopah. An old military hangar with rusted parts and useless junk. Perfect place to find cover and take these assholes out.
My Reaper laughed.
Time to party.
Chapter 12
Bruiser found us.
I recognized his black Chevy Silverado as it barreled down Hwy 95, intent on running us over. Who knew if he intended to kill me or just inflict more pain? Bruiser probably equally enjoyed the idea of either. The sadist fuck liked to hurt people, and he loved it when my father gave the word to take someone out.
Daniel’s gun in my hand, I squeezed the trigger without hesitation, aiming for Bruiser’s face through the windshield. The bike’s bumpy progression through the desert wreaked havoc on my ability to stay on target.
No one knew that I knew how to use a gun. Snooki took me out into the desert a few months back, delighted to teach me all that I needed to know to protect myself. A skill I lacked my entire life. I wasn’t so vulnerable and easily overpowered now.
If only I had a gun with me when Bruiser found me at the mall.
But then, I’d probably be in jail right now for murder.
Snooki said I should buy a gun once I learned how to use it properly, but I wasn’t ready at the time. Stupid. I should have listened.
A giant warehouse with crumbling, rusted walls and a collapsed roof began to morph into shape ahead of us. The beast of a structure spread across a mile of sand, broken airplane parts, and debris scattered around outside the building. I scanned the area, spooked by the bright stars overhead, the low-hanging moon, and the wind as it whispered secrets.
Tonopah parked its small town about seventy miles from Area 51, and many believed the clear sky offered access to alien activity and ghosts who wandered the Great Basin in Nevada. Many were rumored to have died mining for silver and gold. If you listened to the wind, you could almost hear the voices of those left behind calling out for help. Maybe they just wanted to find peace.
