I snapped my gaze back to the words before me as he smirked.
“It’s fine.” I nodded to the pile of his grandmother’s romance novels on the coffee table. “How’s the research going?”
“There’s no point. I already know every trick…”—he grinned—“In the book.”
“Wow.” I mocked. “If you think so.”
“Enlighten me.”
I slid a random book from the pile and pushed it across the table. “Enlighten yourself.”
Adam’s brow rose as he stared down at it. “Have you read this one?”
“Not yet, but I’m sure you could learn something from it. They’re full of surprises.”
He grew silent for a moment before easing forward. “I guess I could try another,” he uttered before snatching up the novel. After adjusting Harrison into the nook of his neck, he opened the book and began reading.
A half hour later, I peeked over my book to find Adam completely engrossed in his. “You can put Harrison in the bassinet now.”
“He’s fine.” Adam turned the page. “He’s keeping me warm.”
I had loved it when Finn fell asleep on me as a baby. His steady heartbeat and breathing always lulled me into a deep state of relaxation. “Sounds like you have baby paralysis.”
“Yeah.” Harrison bounced up and down with Adam’s chuckle. “I guess I do.”
I basked in Adam’s aura and found myself at ease for the first time around him. His softer side was intoxicating, and I couldn’t help but steal glances while we read.
“What’s so funny?” I asked Adam when he snickered for the sixth time.
“This book.” He tapped the page. “It’s hilarious. I didn’t know romance books could be so…comical.”
“You’ve never heard of a rom-com?”
His expression didn’t falter. “Am I supposed to know what that means?”
“Rom-com? Romantic comedy? It’s a sub-genre.”
“A sub-genre?” Adam’s forehead crinkled. “Will there still be hot sex?”
“They all have different heat levels.”
“Where do I find the kinky shit? That’s what I’ve been waiting for.”
I giggled. “That would be erotica.”
Adam closed his book and rested it on his lap. “So, what’s your favoritesub-genre?”
“Well, up until about a month ago, I’d say… contemporary romance.”
He narrowed his gaze. “And now?”
Heat devoured my cheeks as I opened my mouth, with every intention to lie, when the library door creaked open.
“How’s my baby?” Josie whispered, creeping into the room. Her mouth fell open when she discovered Harrison asleep on Adam’s chest. “Oh.”
Thankful for the distraction, I rested my book on the coffee table and stood.
Grayson spotted his son moments after Josie and did a double-take. “Never thought I’d say this, but that suits you, bro.”
