Adam folded his arms. “What makes her more responsible than me?”

“It’s just that…she has more experience with…”

My eyes widened.

“…looking after people,” she added quickly. “Like Liam, for instance.”

Adam rolled his eyes. “Seriously, how hard could it be?”

“Why do people do this to themselves?!” Adam exclaimed, simultaneously pacing and tapping Harrison’s back while he bawled.

“You need to relax.” I leaned forward in the wingback chair. “He can sense your tension.”

Adam’s body stiffened as he endured another wail. “Can you take him now?” His eyes pleaded with mine. “Please?”

“Just give it a few more minutes.” I tucked the knitted blanket around my legs with no intention of moving. I was entirely too comfortable and maybe enjoying Adam’s discomfort a little too much.

When Harrison’s cries grew louder, Adam’s nervous energy pulled my attention from the novel I was attempting to read. “Just relax…”

“This is torture. Are you not helping on purpose?”

“Why would I do that?” I asked, frustrated to have lost my place for the fifth time.

“I get the impression you don’t like me very much.”

“It’s not that.” I sighed. “I just don’t know you.”

“What do you want to know?”

“I think, given our situation, it’s probably best to keep our distance.”

“What are you afraid of? Falling for my charm again?”

“Unlikely. It was bad enough the first time.”

“Bad?” His jaw dropped. “It got you into my bed in record time.”

“Maybe it was my charm that worked on you.”

“Are you saying if another guy had walked into that bar that night and sat beside you, you would’ve gone home with him?”

A small smile played on my lips. “Perhaps.”

“Perhaps my ass.”

“Look, let’s not talk about the past. You’re here to bond with your nephew.”

“Well, he needs to stop screaming in my ear.”

“He has.”

Adam cocked his head back. “Oh.” Harrison had fallen asleep on his shoulder.

“Give it a few more minutes, then transfer him to the bassinet.” I’d moved it from Liam’s room into the library after Josie and Grayson left for their big date in town. Liam needed the rest after a long day with his family.

Defying my suggestion, Adam took Harrison to the other wingback and cautiously lowered himself into it. Harrison lay across his broad chest, and I feared my ovaries would burst on sight.

“Boring book?” he asked, sensing my stare.
