Her dragon had repeatedly told her to just reach out and ask him to touch her.
But she'd resisted.
She had no idea what game he was playing at with the ridiculous agreement, but no doubt he had ulterior motives. Ones that would probably leave her stranded somewhere and furious as he claimed Dragon's Court for himself.
Eventually, she'd fallen asleep and awoken to full daylight streaming through the window. Despite the covers and the radiator to heat the room, she shivered. The cold had never been her friend.
Max's voice came from the direction of the doorway. "There are some clothes for you on the chair in the corner. Get dressed and I'll start breakfast."
Before she could poke her head out from under the blankets, he was gone.
Her dragon yawned.A male who can cook. Yet another good thing about him.
Don't start this again, dragon.
Why not? You seem determined to find fault with every little thing about him, as if needing so many negatives that you can justify running away again.
One of the most annoying things about having a second personality inside your head is that they knew you, and lies were useless. And you trust too easily.
He's our true mate. That means I'll at least give him a chance.
While not a guarantee for a happy ever after, true mates usually meant a decent shot at happiness.
Her dragon spoke again.I think what you truly don't like about the whole thing is the lack of choice.
Maybe.
Ever since she'd joined the wandering group of dragon-shifters as a child and learned to survive in the bush on her own, she'd never leaned on anyone ever again.
It was safer and more predictable that way.
Her beast spoke softly,I'm not saying entrust your heart and soul straight away. But maybe don't assume he's a villain without proof. After all, he's the father of our child.
Lavinia placed a hand over her lower belly. That had been another thing that had kept her up the night before.
It had started to sink in that she was going to be a mother.
She hadn't planned for it to happen now, or maybe ever. But it had, and given her past of being rejected by one parent and orphaned by the other's death, she would do everything in her power to ensure her baby didn't go through the same.
Max was the unpredictable piece in that puzzle, though. She didn't want to deny him the chance to know their child, but she didn't know him well enough to determine if he would be a good dad. Lavinia could barely remember her father, but even with what he'd done to her, knowing him and being rejected by him still hurt. What if one day Max didn't want to be a father anymore, and her child went through the same heartbreak?
Pressing against her lower belly, Lavinia vowed her baby would never have to suffer like her. Which meant figuring out what to do with Max before her child was old enough to remember him.
The only good thing was that dragon-shifter genes were always dominant, so her baby would have to live with her and a dragon clan; Max couldn't take him or her away.
Her dragon sighed. Before you condemn him, spend time getting to know the human. Dress, go eat, and treat breakfast with Max like a first date.
As if that will make me any less nervous. What if it's an hour of silence? That'd be awkward.
Her beast snorted. He's seen us naked, and moaning, and we drew blood with our nails on his back. Somehow, I think it won't be that bad.
Not wanting her dragon to replay anything else from the frenzy, Lavinia jumped from the bed and walked to the pile of clothes on the chair.
She had no fucking idea how he'd done it, but the jeans, sweater, and underthings fit her like a glove.
Her stomach rumbled as she made her way out of the room and down the hall toward the smell of bacon.
After a few deep breaths, she straightened her shoulders and entered the kitchen and dining area.
