Think you’re safe behind that fence, piggy? I’m closer than you think. I’m so close I can smell you. So close I can touch you. So close I can taste your bloooood.
How long had he been out there? Watching? Waiting?
My heart skittered.
And how long before he got past the fence?
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
Adrik
My phone buzzed in my hand before I could call Efrem back.
I swiped the screen.
Unknown caller.
I hesitated, then clicked on the text message.
Ding-dong! The wolf is here, and the game is about to begin. Are you ready to play? May the best wolf win. Ahhhooooo!
What the fuck?
I glared at the message.
Who was this asshole? How did he get my number?
May the best wolf win…
Something niggled at the back of my mind. Did he know who I was? Was that a reference to the meaning of my name, or was it just a taunt to get me to engage?
Best wolf…
My breath caught.
My blood iced over.
Papa?
Was this his way of finally taking out his revenge against Alexei for firing him all those years ago? I considered that for a moment. While stalking and terrorizing a woman wasn’t exactly his way, I wouldn’t put anything past him.
I growled. I should have gone back and taken him out years ago. If he was behind this, he was going to die.
But no, I was pretty certain Papa wasn’t the man who’d attacked Annika in Chicago. He might be a vindictive asshole, but he wasn’t smart enough to pull off that attack.
My mind spun.
But if not Papa, then who?
Again, that niggling slipped in, taunting me.
The only other wolf I knew of was Damien, but he was dead.
Was it someone else from my past, then? From Goliath’s freak show? If so,who?
I wracked my brain, trying to think of someone, but I came up empty.
Another text popped up.
