“Hell yeah,” Wolf said.

“Really?” That came from Kate.

“I do,” Connor said.

“I have to keep my drinking private,” Eli said.

“I have to check with the wife,” Connor said. “Since we’ve been gone all day, I want to make sure she’s not pulling her hair out.”

“Your cousin’s visiting,” Jack said. “Seems reasonable to me.”

“Yeah, she has your monsters, too,” Connor said. “She’s probably just about done.”

“I can take the monsters. Yours included,” Kate said. “I don’t mind. Tell Liss to have the night off.”

“Great,” Connor said. “It’s settled. We’ll go out to Ace’s tonight.”

“What’s Ace’s?”

“Only the best bar in town.”

“Theonlybar in town,” Jack said.

“There is a mechanical bull,” Kate said. “You can show your chops on Ferdinand.”

“No, thanks,” Wolf said. “I try to keep making an ass of myself to a minimum.”

He thought of this morning. He made a pretty decent ass of himself then. Actually, what he should do was see if there were any women that he found particularly attractive down at the bar tonight. Maybe that would cure him. Maybe that would give him something else to focus on. Surely, there was a motel or two in town. He didn’t even have to bring the woman back to the B and B. Hell, he wouldn’t. He wasn’t that tacky.

But he could rescue Violet from him and his evil intent. There. He wasn’t a terrible person. He had a plan all sorted out to save her. From him and his untrustworthy cock.

“Guess we better wrap it up and go get cleaned up a bit,” Jack said.

“Guess so.”

And Wolf felt satisfied with this. All right, maybe it meant he wouldn’t get quite what he wanted. But he could deal with it. And whether or not he actually felt some kind of prick in his conscience, it didn’t really matter. He was going to do the right thing. That ought to count for something.

CHAPTER SIX

THEPROBLEMWASthat Wolf didn’t come back to the bed-and-breakfast. She waited, and waited, and he didn’t appear. She tried to be friendly and engaging to all of the guests over wine-and-cheese hour, and remember the local history, and all of that so that she could make them feel like they were getting the full experience. But she was distracted. By the fact that she had finally decided to do something, and the man had not come home. She waited. She waited and waited, and she was beginning to think that this was revenge for last night.

Finally, in a fit of rage, she called Clara. “I want to go out.”

“You do?” Clara asked.

“Yes. I want to go out. Let’s go to Ace’s.”

“I have to get the kids to bed.”

“Well, tell Alex to do it.”

“Will you be the designated driver so I can promise him I’ll come home tipsy and easy?”

“Aren’t you always easy?”

Clara laughed. “Well. Yes. But he does like me tipsy. Hell, I like me tipsy. It’s fun.”

“Fine. Unless...unless something happens. Then I’ll pay for a taxi for you.”
