Luna was about to tell him to forget about it when there was a sudden ringing of her doorbell. Frowning, she put her cell phone down and moved toward her door. She opened it up and found Matthew on her doorstep.
“What are you—”
“I was in the neighborhood.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, really.”
“I think that’s called stalking,” she said.
“Does it matter what it is called? You texted and I’m here.”
Without giving her enough time to back out. Kind of clever.
“You want to let me in?” Matthew asked.
Luna stepped back, and he walked into her home.
She closed the door, leaning against it as she turned to look at him. Matthew was taller now. His hair dark. He’d had it cut recently. He wore his leather jacket, proclaiming him to be a Trojans MC prospect.
He was bigger than before. More muscular.
She had watched from behind the door as he’d punched that bag with all his might. Kid, the other guy, had looked in pain from just holding it.
“Why did you want to see me?” he asked.
She tucked some of her hair behind her ear. “There, er, have to be some ground rules.”
“Ground rules?”
“Yes.”
“I’m not following.”
“Fine. You win, Matthew. Our first time sucked. It sucked big time, and you would think with how much I hated you, and how you screwed your way through high school, dicking every single girl that would have you, that I would have quite happily never looked back. I didn’t. I’ve never had sex with anyone else. There. I’ve said it. You’re the only guy I’ve had sex with, and yeah, it sucked. For some reason, I can’t bring myself to have sex with any other guy, and seeing as you’ve seen me at my worst—in-pain, crying, and hating every single second of it, and we’ve got this history, you know, with almost being pregnant and all, that we could have sex, and it wouldn’t suck, so that at least we can move on. Move on with our lives and never look back.” She stopped talking and took a deep breath.
“So, ground rules?”
“You don’t have a problem with this?”
He shook his head.
“Why?” she asked.
“You’re offering me sex and a chance to make it better for you. Why would I turn that down?” he asked. “I’m a guy withneeds, and you’re offering to fulfill them.”
She held her hand up. “This— We have to be only us.” She couldn’t ask him to be exclusive. They weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. They weren’t going to be together forever. This was it.
Just sex. Only this summer. No other time.
“Fine. I wasn’t going to be with anyone else,” Matthew said. “Any other ground rules?”
“You can’t tell anyone what we’re doing. This is between us.”
“Fine. You can’t tell anyone either.”
“There’s no one for me to tell.” She licked her lips.
